Since the Earth itself is not available for experimentation, climate science relies on mathematical models to make up its ‘laboratory’. Despite this, the (applied) mathematical community has not seriously engaged itself in climate research. I argue that the urgency of addressing climate change will change this over the coming decade and suggest some ways that mathematics might evolve in response.

We argue the case for a new branch of mathematics and its applications: Mathematics for the Digital Society. There is a challenge for mathematics, a strong “pull” from new and emerging commercial and public activities; and a need to train and inspire a generation of quantitative scientists who will seek careers within the associated sectors.
Although now going through an early phase of boiling up, prior to scholarly distillation, we discuss how data rich activities and applications may benefit from a wide range of continuous and discrete models, methods, analysis and inference. In ten years time such applications will be common place and associated courses may be embedded within the undergraduate curriculum.

One of the key problems she focuses on is making better use of the vast but unwieldy biological datasets in databases around the world. “So instead of focusing on one study, we can take the entirety of published data. That allows you to ask very specific questions in a data-driven way and to develop novel biological hypotheses,” she says.
Troyanskaya's approach is to develop new ways for extracting useful information from these datasets using techniques from computer science such as machine learning and data mining.

Scenario: British research funding
The British government is a more recent addition to the Linking Open Data movement. On the advice of the web's inventor, Sir Tim Berners Lee, the government launched an initiative to get government agencies and local authorities to release their public data online. The government is serious about getting more and more data published.
At the time of this writing, 5,400 datasets are available. Some of the datasets are available as RDF through a SPARQL endpoint, such as the research funding dataset. This dataset includes more than 43,000 facts about projects that have been funded by various British funding agencies…
