Japan and Australian mutual security treat

Mr. Downer, the Minister of Foreign Affairs appealed to Australian citizens that they should support the conclusion of the mutual security treat with Japan, even if there has been tenacious antipathy against cruel behavior of Japanese army in the world second war. His father was committed to Changi(Singapore) for 3 years as a prisoner of war. He also said “Japanese young generation are not taught modern history as we hope” and “it is a shame that Japanese people are not conscious enough about what happened in the history as much as German do.” （by Reuters）

シティーにはエスプラネードとビーチの間に幅100ｍの公園が3ｋｍ続いています。公園に沿って海側に3ｋｍの木道があり、中国マッサージのついでに散歩します。まだ500ｍくらいしか歩けませんが、少しずつ距離を伸ばしています。公園の南外れにラグーン（潟、池、礁湖）と呼ばれる海辺の巨大プールがあり、誰でも無料で遊べます。

There’s a park of 100m wide and 3km long between the esplanade and the beach in the City. There’s 3 km long wooden road along the park on the seaside and I take a walk after Chinese massage. I can walk only 500m now but I have prolonged the distance a little every time. There’s a huge swimming pool, called lagoon at the south end of the park in where anybody can enjoy swimming free of charge.

ナイト・マーケットのフード・コートには11軒の食堂が入っています。内5軒はアジア食堂で「自助餐(セルフ・サービス)」の看板を掲げています。店には大中小の3種類の皿があり、それぞれ1200円、1000円、800円。客は10数種類の料理を皿に盛れるだけ取ることができます。ケアンズは豪州北限の僻地なので物価は高めです。

There are 11 restaurants at the food court in the night market. 5 of them are Asian restaurants that have the sign “self service”. They prepare 3 kinds of plate, big, medium and small and the price is 1200, 1000 and 800 in yen each. There are more than 10 kinds of food and you can get as much as you can heap on your plate. The price is pretty expensive because Cairns is the northest remote place in Australia.

ケアンズのエスプラネード(海岸通り)には観光客相手のしゃれた店が並んでいますが、ナイト・マーケットはかなり地味。アメ横を小さくしたような雑居ビルで、土産物屋も食堂も納得価格。ここに3軒の中国マッサージが軒を連ね脚の奪い合いをしています。正午から開店の店もありますが、大半は夕方開店です。

Night market

There are so many snappy shops at the esplanade in Cairns but the night market is pretty inconspicuous. It is the office block just like miniature Ame-yoko in Japan and the prices in the souvenir shops and food are quite reasonable. There are 3 Chinese massage shops and they scramble for the customer. Some shops open at noon but most ones at late afternoon.

本日装具をつけて整形外科を受診後、装具はゴミに捨てました。僕の家にはジャグジー以外は段差はないので不要です。毎日シティーまで車を運転して中国マッサージ通い。40分で1500円と格安。プールで2000ｍ泳ぎ、ユミに手を引かれてビーチを散歩。夜はジャグジーで血行を良くしながら、1時間硬直した筋肉を揉み解します。

After seeing the orthopedic doctor with my surgical boot I threw it away* to the rubbish bin. I don’t need it because there are no steps in my house except the Jacuzzi. I drive to the City every day to have Chinese massage. It is quite reasonable with 1500 in yen for 40 minutes. I swim 2000m and walk on the beach being supported by Yumi. At night I take Jacuzzi for 1 hour to improve the blood circulation and to soften my rigid muscle by massage.

ブラック・ビーン

3月11日(日)快晴

火炎樹とともにケアンズを代表する夏の花木。マメ科の植物で大木になり赤やピンクや白の花を咲かせます。花形はスイートピーの巨大版で、街路樹に利用されます。花が終わると巨大な鞘が垂れ下がり、ゴルフボール大の豆が3－4個入っています。若木は日本では「ジャックと豆の木」の名で売られています。

Black bean is one of the main tree flowers like flame tree in summer in Cairns. It’s in the bean family and becomes the huge tree that blooms red, pink, and white flowers. The shape of its flower is like that of big sweet pea and it is lined up on the roads. After blossoms the big pods hang down and there are 3-4 golf ball sized beans in each of them. Its young tree is sold as “Jack and his bean tree” in Japan.

心なしか日差しも和らぎケアンズも秋の気配。僕のアパートではプルメリアが相変わらず甘い香りを放っていますが、この季節に一番目立つのはクモユリの白い花。街路樹では夏を謳歌していた火炎樹をほとんど見かけなくなり、ユーカリの黄色い花が目立つようになりました。大木全体が燃えるような火炎樹は見る人を感動させますが、近くで見ると意外とつまらない花です。

The sunshine seems to be a little mild and I think it’s the sign of fall approaching to Cairns. Plumerias have still been sending sweet scent to my apartment but spider lilies stand out the most in this season. Among the trees lining the roads you rarely see flame trees that were blooming proudly in summer but eucalyptuses. Flame trees look like as their whole bodies burning up and that attracts people, but if you look them close their flowers are nothing unique.

3月9日(金)雨後晴

半月振りにケアンズに戻りました。午前中は雨。最高気温は30度。同じ熱帯でもシンガポールほど暑くはないし、蒸し蒸しもしません。夕方日が傾いた頃、ユミに手を引かれて家の前のビーチを散歩。ビーチを歩くのはアキレス腱を切った1月15日以来53日振り。

I’m back to Cairns after half a month. It was rainy in the morning. The hightest temperature was 30 degrees. Cairns locates in tropical area like Singapore but it is neither extremely hot nor humid. When the sun is about to sink I walked on the beach in front of my apartment supported by Yumi. It was 53 days after the accident on January 15 when I got my Achilles tendon fractured.

3月8日(木)快晴

アキレス腱縫合手術から6週間を経過。船内では毎日アママで硬直した右脚のマッサージを受けて、足首も大分曲がるようになりました。正午シンガポール到着。7：00ｐｍ下船し、ケアンズ行きの飛行機に乗ります。松葉杖は診療室に寄付。装具ももう要りません。しかしシェパード先生に無断でギプスを外したので、3月12日には不要な装具を付けて受診します。

Amama

6 weeks passed from my Achilles tendon operation. I had massage on my rigid right leg every day at Amama, inboard massage shop, and my right ankle gradually became flexible. Our ship reached Singapore port at noon. I am going to disembark at 7:00pm and fly to Cairns. I donated my crutches to the clinic inboard. Also I don’t need my surgical boot anymore. As I have taken off my plaster cast without Dr. Shepherd’s permission I am going to go to his office wearing the useless boot on May 12.

ダナン港でコンテナを運ぶトラックの港湾労働者たちが昼の小休止を取っています。陽射しが強いけど日陰はありません。運転席で1人が仮眠中。そしてトラックの下にハンモックを吊って2人が眠っています。間違って走り出したら？と思うと見る側も怖い。

Port workers who bring containers by trucks are taking some afternoon break at Danan port. The sunshine is strong and there’s no shadow. One worker is sleeping in the driver’s seat and there are 2 in the hammocks under the truck. I felt frightening imagining what would happen if the truck started by mistake.

タイ人の話のついでではありませんが胎児のお話。ダナンの道端の小さな食堂でエミリーが目ざとく見つけたアヒルのゆで卵。少し胸騒ぎがしましたが、やっぱり！殻をむくと中から毛の生えたアヒルの胎児。羊水と言うか、殻の中のスープが絶品だそうです。生きたイセエビを半身に切って火あぶりにするのも残酷だけど胎児はねえ。

Regret for looking the boiled egg

This is not about people in Thailand but something about fetuses. Emily was so quick-eyed that she found out duck’s boiled eggs at the small restaurant on the road side in Danan. I had a presentiment… and something just I thought happened. Oh my got! When she peeled the eggshell I found the hairy duck fetus in it. Amniotic fluid or soup in the egg was the superb, she said. It’s quite cruel to cut and grill live lobster but fetuses could be worse…

佐々木看護師と花輪夫人・エミリーとでダナン市内のシーフード・レストランへ。昼食時だったのでタイ人旅行客で賑わっていましたが、団体客が出払うと落ち着いたムードに。メインは水槽で元気に泳ぐイセエビ３尾。アサリのスープやシーフードのお粥やビールやフルーツなどたらふく飲み食いして3人分で5000円。物価は日本の10分の1くらい。タイ人に人気があるはずですよね。

I went to the sea food restaurant in Danan with our nurse, Miss. Sasaki and Mrs. Emily Hanawa. When we got there as it was just lunch time it was very crowded with Thai tourists in the restaurant. Right after those tourists left it became quiet atmosphere. We ordered 3 lobsters that had swam in the water tank for main dish. We also ordered some clam soup, seafood congee, beer, and fruit. It was only 5000 in yen. Prices in this county are about one tenth of they are in Japan. I understand the reason why so many Thai tourist rush to Vietnam.

3月4日(日)晴

8：00amダナン入港。花輪船医夫妻とフラマー・ホテルへ。今日でアキレス腱縫合手術から38日目。プールサイドで装具を外して、1500mを3本、計4500ｍ泳ぎました。この水治療のお陰で右脚の筋肉も大分柔らかくなり、歩行もスムーズになったのでもう装具なしで大丈夫のようです。

Weapon farewell

At 8:00am we entered Danan port. I went to Flamar Resort Hotel with Dr. and Mrs. Hanawa. It is the 38th day from my Achilles tendon operation today. I took off the surgical boot at the pool side and swam 3 sets of 1500m, or 4500m in total. As this hydrotherapy made my right leg muscle more tender and I could walk smoothly. I don’t think I’ll need the boot from now.

台湾の魚市場

3月3日(土)快晴

台湾の魚市場は、日本と比べると魚の種類が多くはありません。水槽には色々の活魚が泳いでいて、値段は高くはありません。買った魚は隣接する食堂で調理してくれます。車海老、桜海老、シャコ、ソイ、牡蠣、蛤などを刺身にしてもらいましたが、味は少し期待はずれ。請求書はかなり期待はずれに高かった。

There are not so many kinds of fish as it is in Japan in the fish market in Taiwan. Several kinds of fresh fish are swimming in the water tank and they are quite reasonable. If you buy the fish they cook them for you in the restaurants next-door. We ordered some prawn, scampi, mantis shrimp, rockfish, oyster, clam and asked to make them sashimi. It didn’t taste like we expected and the bill came out unexpectedly expensive.

雨の港町・基隆は20年以上前に来たことがあります。表通りは大きなビルが増えましたが、裏道は当時のまま。タクシーに40分揺られて海を見下ろす山頂の街・九份へ。かつてここは金鉱でしたが閉山後は高原の保養地。仲見世が300mほど続き、珍しい食べ物屋や土産屋が並んでいます。茶店で阿里山の高原茶を飲みました。

Kyoohoon

I’ve been to rainy port, Keyloon more than 20 years ago. Although the main streets have been changed due to increase of big buildings, back streets stay the same as they were in those days. I went to the town on the top of the hill, Kyoohoon where you can look down the ocean by taxi spending 40 minutes. Once there was the gold mine there and after being closed it has become the highland resort. There are lots of small shops such as curious food shops, souvenir shops lining up for 300m long.
