原発の制御にとって、もうひとつ重要な点は、発生する熱の管理と制御という問題である。100万キロワット（10億ワット）と言ってわかりにくければ、炉心では8時間に1発の広島原発が爆発する割合で、熱エネルギーが放出されている。この熱を恒常的に炉心から取り出し、水蒸気を作りだして発電を行うわけであるが、日本などに一般的な軽水炉では、この熱の伝達・冷却の役割を担うのが水である。すなわち、100万キロワット級の原発では、毎秒10トン以上の冷却水を炉心に送りこんで、炉心の冷却を行う。

The nuclear power plant as a technological system
It is another important matter for the control of a nuclear plant to manage and control the heat produced by it. If it is not easy to imagine a nuclear plant with a million kilowatt (a billion watt) of electric output capacity, you should conceive of one which can give off the heat energy from its core every 8 hours equivalent to the explosion energy of a Hiroshima atomic bomb. It is water that transfers and cools the heat in light-water reactor plants general to many countries including Japan. And the heat is constantly brought out of its core to generate power. A million-kilowatt class of nuclear plant needs over 10 tons water per second to cool its core.
