サバンナの水辺にあるコテッジ。色々の動物が水浴びや水を飲むためにやってきます。高床式なのでライオンやハイエナがやってきても大丈夫。シャワーもありますがお湯は出ません。食事も美味しかったそうです。（photo by Yumi）

A cottage in savanna

Yumi stayed at the cottage near the lake in savanna. Various kinds of animals come to bathe and drink water. As the cottage is a high deck, there’s no problem even if lions or hyenas approach. There is the shower but no hot water. The meal was quite tasty, she said. (photo by Yumi)

船内で肺炎の患者が発生したので、僕はケニアでも下船できません。ユミは１泊のサファリに出かけました。動物はサバンナの草の向こうにいるので、乗客はサファリ・カーの天井から顔を出してのぞきます。ライオン、ヒョウ、シマウマ、ゾウ、インパラ、サル、ダチョウ、水牛などを見たそうです。（photo by Yumi）

There was a pneumonia patient inboard, so I couldn’t go ashore in Kenya. Yumi went out to have 2-day safari tour. The tourists watched animals behind the high grass of savanna putting their heads out the safari car from the ceiling. She saw lions, leopards, zebras, elephants, impalas, monkeys, ostriches, and water buffalos. (photo by Yumi)

バナナ６本とザクロ３個で２００円。言い値で購入しましたが、１００円まで値切ってもあまり自慢にはなりません。買い物客は道端で平気で放尿しています。果物でも野菜でも地面に直に並べているので、結局トゥクトゥクの運転手にあげました。

We bought 6 bananas and 3 pomegranates for 200 in Yen at the market. Even if we negotiate and get them for 100 Yen, it doesn’t mean much. The shoppers don’t mind pissing at the roadside. Fruits and vegetables are displayed directly on the ground, so we gave what we’d bought to our tokutoku driver.

トゥクトゥクの運転手が観光客を土産物屋やレストランに連れて行くとリベートがもらえます。そして当然のように客と一緒のテーブルで食事をします。彼は回教徒ですがタバコを吸ってビールも飲んで飲酒運転です。１日１回しかお祈りをしないそうですが、豚肉は決して食べないそうです。

The tokutoku driver can get rake-off if ｔhey bring the customers to the gift shops or restaurants. They even have lunch at the tables with their customers. Being a moslim, our driver smokes, drinks beer and also drives while intoxicated. He said he prays only 1 time a day and never eat pork.

トゥクトゥクに乗るのは命がけ。街にほとんど信号はありません。歩道があっても色々の物を路上に置いているので、歩行者も車道を歩きます。車の他に牛車や自転車やリヤカーも行き交います。左側通行のはずですが、障害物があると平気で右側を走ったりします。

Taking the tokutoku is quite risky. There are no traffic signals in the town. The sidewalks are full of stuff and so the pedestrians walk on the driveways. Not only cars but also cow carts and bicycles come and go there. They are supposed to drive left but they don’t hesitate to drive right when there is any obstacle ahead.

トゥクトゥクはタクシーですからメーターがついています。僕はこれまで何度もトゥクトゥクに乗りましたが、正常に作動するメーターにお目にかかった事はありません。料金は交渉制で、観光客には高くふっかけます。バックミラーもついていますが方向は客席に向けられています。どうやら客に乗り逃げされないためのバックミラーのようです。

Taximeter of tokutoku

The Tokutoku has the taximeter. I have taken it more than a few times but never saw the meter that operates normally. The fare is decided by negotiation and they always ask for higher fare to the tourists. It has the rearview mirrors and they are pointing the customer seats. They seem likely to be for watching the customer to avoid from running away without paying.

日本ではもう見かけなくなった小型自動三輪車のタクシー。客は２人しか乗れません。親分から１日６００円で借りて、１日１５時間働いてもなかなか儲けが出ないそうです。僕もユミも値切れない性格。途中でシーフードを食べさせて、船からダウンタウンまでで３０００円の支払い。帰りはジェッティと呼ばれるフェリーボートで１人５円でした。

Indian cab is an automatic mini tricycle that we cannot see anymore in Japan. It accommodates only 2 customers. Renting a cab from his boss with 600 in yen and working 15 hours a day, it is still had for the driver to make profit. Neither of me and Yumi is good at asking for bargain. We bought him lunch and paid 3000 in yen for the ride from out ship to downtown. We took the ferry boat on the way back and it was 5 in yen per each of us.

診療室はドクター１人、ナース１人。その三上ナースは青森県弘前市の出身。航海中に誕生日を迎えるとあっては放って置けません。他のクルーにも呼びかけて船内居酒屋「波へい」で誕生パーティー。

There are a doctor and a nurse in our clinic. The nurse, Ms. Mikami is from Hirosaki in Aomori prefecture. When she is having her birthday during the cruise there’s no one but me taking leadership. I talked to the crew and held her birthday party in the Japanese Izakaya, Namihei.

インドでは沢山の乗客がお腹をこわして診療室に来るのではないかとの予想が外れて、急性胃腸炎の患者はゼロ。生水には注意したようですが、大半の乗客は現地でカレーを食べています。インドはトラよりも肉屋や魚屋が怖いと僕は考えています。

In spite of my prospect that there will be a lot of patients who have stomachache or diarrhea, there was no one who had acute gastroenteritis. Everyone was cautious about unboiled water and most passengers had local curry and rice. In my opinion the butcher and fish stores are scarier than tigers in India.

今日の午後初めてユミと外出。トゥクトゥクという三輪バイクの運転手推薦の川辺のレストラン。店内もあまり清潔とは言えないし、川の匂いも気になります。ウエイターが数種類の魚介類をテーブルまで持って来て、食材を選び、調理法を指定します。潔癖症の僕はユミに励まされながら、怖々食べました。

I went out with Yumi for the first time on this cruise. We went to the restaurant on the riverside the driver of a tricycle motorbike, tokutoku recommended us. It was not so clean and we didn’t like the smell from the river. The waiter brought several kinds of fish to our table and asked us to choose a few from them and how to cook. As I am fastidious Yumi encouraged me and I tried some timidly.

コーチンの漁民は釣り針や魚網を使いません。魚は沢山いますが、水草やゴミも沢山流れていいるので、釣りや網では漁になりません。漁民はかごで漁をします。餌を入れて沈め、数分後にかごを引き上げると魚やエビやカニが入っています。

The fishermen in Cochin do not use the fishhooks or fishing nets. They are not useful since more waterweed and rubbish are floating than fish in the rivers. Fishermen here use baskets instead. They put bate in the baskets and sink them under the water. A few minutes later you can find some fish and prawns in them.

インド半島の南西に位置するコーチンは水郷地帯。農業と漁業の街です。海辺や川では漁師が小船で漁をしています。水は濁って沢山の水草やゴミが浮いていて、とても清潔とは言えません。生水を飲んだら間違いなくお腹をこわすそうですが、魚は元気で泥水の中を泳ぎまわっています。

Cochin is the riverside district located on the southeast of the India peninsula. Fishermen are catching fish on the small boats on the seashore or in the rivers. The water is anything but clean. It is muddy, and waterweed and rubbish are floating on the surface. The fish looks happy swimming in muddy river, although people will have stomachaches for sure once they drink unboiled water.

オフィサーは船内では制服の着用を義務付けられています。僕はクルーですが、ユミは乗客。船内でもほとんど別行動だし、寄港地でもなかなか一緒に外出はできません。クルーと乗客は食堂も別ですが、船医の特権で時々朝食は一緒にとり、１日１度は船内を２人で散歩しています。

Officers were required to wear the uniforms on the ship. I am one of the crew and Yumi is the passenger. We are rarely together on the ship and hardly go out together at the port of calls. The crew and the passengers have meals in different dining rooms, however, being the ship doctor I am privileged to have breakfast with Yumi occasionally. We also take a walk together on the ship once a day.

一昨日シンガポールで大量のトロピカル・フルーツを搬入。今日は甲板で恒例のフルーツ・パーティー。赤道直下の太陽に照らされて乗客の多くが真っ黒に日焼け。クルーは夕食時に涼しい食堂で山のようなデザートに挑戦。それでも食べ切れなかった果物は海洋投棄されます。

The day before yesterday we carried in a great amount of tropical fruit from Singapore.
According to custom on our ship the fruit party took place on the deck today. Many passengers got sunburn by the strong sunshine right on the equator. On the other hand the crew challenged to mountainous amount of fruit in the cool dining room at dinner time. The leftover was dumped into the ocean.

８月２日(水)

プール・デッキには大人用プールと子供用プールとジャグジーがあります。プールサイドは濡れているし、船が揺れるので危険です。しかし泳いでいる人は十分それを心得ているので滅多に転倒しません。骨折した若者は音響機材の仕事を手伝っていて、風で飛ばされた書類を追いかけて、子供用のプールサイドで滑って転倒しました。

There are 2 swimming pools, one for adults and the other for children, and the Jacuzzi. To be on the deck is quite dangerous as the poolside is always wet and the ship pitches. Swimmers seldom fall since they are well conscious. A young guy broke his bone because he slipped and fell on the poolside when he was helping carrying the sound equipments and tried to catch some documents that were blown off by wind.
