ドイツ発祥の伝統工芸品で、王様や兵士などの形をした高さが30－50ｃｍもあるクルミを割るための木製のおもちゃです。背中の取っ手を上げると人形が大きく口を開けクルミを噛み砕きます。重税を課す王様や兵士が憎かったのか、人形はどれも可愛げのない顔をしています。

If you raise the handle on the back of the nutcracker it opens its mouth widely to crack nat. People then must have hated kings and soldiers who lay heavy tax because all the toys have ugly faces.
