1890年代の市場を解体した鋳鉄の建材で建設された歴史的建造物。飲食店が100軒以上入ったシンガポール最大のホーカーズ（屋台村）。ホーカーズでは300円で食事ができます。観光客にはニュートン・サーカスが有名ですが、ローカルの人々の人気はこちらが上。

Lau Pa Sat Festival Market

This is a historical building built with old cast iron materials from the market in 1890s. It is the biggest hawkers or stalls with more than 100 diners in there. You can have dinner with only $3.8 at hawkers. Newton Circus is popular among tourists but this place is more popular among local people.

The founder of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew said “Our country has no resource but intelligence” and he set out to build the intelligent country. Is this an intelligent building? A ship was mounted on three skyscrapers with 300m high each and there is a swimming pool on the roof top. There are three hotels in it with the total of 2,560 rooms. It costs $440 or more per night.

今回の宿はビジネス街のマリーナ地区にあるマンダリン・ホテル。地下鉄の2つの駅とショッピング・センターに直結しています。ホテルから徒歩10分のシンガポール・フライヤーは2008年に開業した高さ165mの世界最大の観覧車。1周するのに1800円、30分かかります。

This time we have arranged accommodation at Mandarin Hotel in Marina district in CBD. It is directly connected to two subway stations and a shopping center. Singapore Flyer that is 10-minute walk away from our hotel is the 165 meters high world biggest wheel. It started to operate in 2008. You’ll need to spend $23 and 30 minutes to go one round.

It takes 7 hours by airplane from Cairns to Singapore. Christmas decoration contest is being held on the main street, Orchard Road. The first place prize winner wins $6,500 and the second place, $3,300. They judge the optical effects both during daytime and nighttime and the energy-saving effects. It’s just a tourism stimulation measure but I wonder why Asian people are keen on Christmas, neon and noise so much.

昨日ケアンズに戻りましたが完全な時差ぼけ。ユミも僕も午前3時に目が覚め、眠れぬままに旅の総括。日本の過剰な終末医療は明らかな間違い。今回の旅で自慢できるのはパルテノン見物。実物の建物はアテネ、彫刻は大英博物館にありますが、ナッシュビルには原寸大のレプリカがあります。最後に未来の旅を楽しくする7つの提言。①世界共通語＝エスペラントを必修とする。②旅券とビザの廃止。③通貨の統一。④度量衡の統一。⑤右側通行の統一。⑥銃器保持の禁止。⑦チップの廃止。米国は想像以上の不合理国家です。

We return to Cairns yesterday and we are still in complete jet lag. Yumi and I woke up at three in the morning and summed up the trip. The heaping life-support given in Japan is apparently a wrong treatment. What we are proud of the most during our trip is visiting Parthenon. The genuine building is in Athens and the sculptures are in the British Museum but the replica made in same size is in Nashville. Finally, here are 7 clues to make our future trips pleasant; ①Esperanto, the global common language to be learned compulsorily. ②Passport and visa to be abolished. ③Currency to be standardized. ④Weights and measurements system to be unified. ⑤Traffic principle to keep right to be global standard. ⑥ Possession of guns to be banned. ⑦Tipping to be abolished. The United States is an unimaginably irrational nation.

こんな所を訪れたからといって自慢にはなりませんが映画「チャーリーズ・エンジェルズ」や「ターミネーター」の舞台になりました。山頂からスモッグにかすむロサンゼルスの町並みが見渡せます。向かい側の丘にはハリウッドの大看板が見えます。昔話になりますが「理由なき反抗（1955年作品）」のロケ地でもあり、構内にジェームス・ディーンの銅像があります。

Los Angels Observatory

It’s not anything you can really proud of but we visited this place where is the stage of movies, “Charlie’s Engel” and “Terminator”. You can look out the smoggy cityscape of Los Angels from the top of the hill. You can see the big sign board of Holly Wood on the hill opposite. Once upon a time “Rebel without a Cause (1955)”was also shot here and there is a bronze statue of James dean on the premise.

トム・ハンクス演ずる知恵遅れのフォレスト・ガンプは戦友ババと国に戻ったらエビ漁会社を興す約束をします。しかしババは戦死。ガンプは1人で起業しましたが不漁続き。他の漁師が次々廃業しても彼はババとの約束を守り続け、ある日突然の豊漁、翌日も、その翌日も。エビ料理店はサンタモニカ・ピアにあります。「フォレスト・ガンプ」のサントラにはベニス・ビーチ出身のドアーズの「ハロー・アイ・ラブ・ユー」も収録されています。

Mental retarded Forrest Gump acted by Tom Hunks promises with his comrade, Baba that they will run a prawn company after coming back to the country. But Baba died in the battle. Gump started the business alone but made poor catch for long time. While other fishermen are giving up their businesses one after another he keeps his promise with Baba. One day he meets an abrupt big catch, and also next day and the day after. The shrimp restaurant is on Santa Monica Pier. “Hello, I Love You” by Doors from Venice Beach is in the sound truck of “Forrest Gump”.

マイアミはキューバ人が多いけれど、ロスはメキシコ人が多く、どちらもまるでスペイン語圏。ロスは凶悪犯罪、公害、地震、山火事が多い上、近年は電力不足、財政難で老人には住みにくそう。和食店や海鮮料理屋は多く、サンタモニカ桟橋で食べた茹でカニや海鮮スープも安くて美味かった。桟橋は「スティング」など多くの映画の舞台、桟橋のゲートは映画「フォレスト・ガンプ」の主人公の米国横断ジョギングの出発点です。

There are lots of Cuban people in Miami, Mexicans in Los Angels and they make both cities like Hispanic areas. Los Angels doesn’t seem to be a good place to live because of many problems of vicious crimes, pollutions, earthquakes and bush fires, moreover, recent electric shortage and financial crisis. There are a lot of Japanese and sea food restaurants. The steamed crab and sea food soup we had at Santa Monica Pier were good and still reasonable. The pier is the stage of “Sting”, and the gate of the pier is the start point where the hero in “Forrest Gump” jogged crossing America.

マイアミから空路5時間ロサンゼルスへ。サンタモニカで骨休めの後豪州に戻ります。サンタモニカは高級住宅街ですがお隣のベニス・ビーチは若者の街。芸術家、大道芸人、露出派アスリート、時代遅れのヒッピーたちのたまり場。不況のためか物乞いの姿も目立ちます。ローラー・ブレードやアスレチック・ジムはここが発祥地。シュワちゃんもここでトレーニングを積んで世界ゴリ・マッチョNo1に7度なり俳優→知事に転向。

We flew 5 hours from Miami to Los Angels. After taking some rest in Santa Monica we are going to return to Australia. Santa Monica is the high-class residential area but neighboring Venice Beach is the town for youth. It’s the hang out of artists, buskers, exhibitionism athletes, and obsolete hippies. You will also see beggars here because of depression. This is the cradle of roller-blades and athletic gyms. Arnold Schwarzenegger trained here to become the world champion of body-building 7 times and then converted to the actor and the governor.

マイアミ市内観光でリトル・ハバナへ。キューバ難民の多く住む地区で公園で老人たちが葉巻を吹かしながらドミノ・ゲームに興じていました。次に訪れたベネチアン・プールは高級住宅街にある「世界一豪華な公共プール」として歴史的建造物に指定されています。入場料は1000円。ケアンズのラグーンは入場無料でもっと豪華だと思うけど。

We visited Little Havana while seeing Miami city sights. It’s the area where many Cuban refugees are living. When we visited some old people were enjoying domino games smoking cigars. After that we visited Venetian Pool in the posh residential area that is name “world luxurious public pool” as the official historical building. Its entrance fee is $10. I think our Lagoon in Cairns is more luxurious and free of charge.

マイアミは市街地を離れると広大な湿原が広がっています。湿原の見物にはエアー・ボートと呼ばれる扇風機で水面を走る船を利用します。騒音がひどいので耳栓が必要です。湿原にはいろいろの魚や鳥やワニが住んでいます。米国のワニのアリゲーターは豪州のワニのクロコダイルに比べると小型で迫力がありません。

As soon as you depart from Miami City the majestic swamp is sprawled. To explore the swamp you use the boat called air boat that goes on the water surface using the motor fan. You’ll need a pair of earplugs because noise is terrible. There are lots of fish, birds and alligators. The alligators are smaller and less powerful than Australian crocodiles.

ヘミングウエイが愛したカリブ海をクルーズし、珊瑚礁の小島でダイビング。珊瑚はほとんど姿を消して、熱帯魚もあまり見当たりません。しかし巨大なエイやバラクーダが悠々と泳いでいました。プレスリーもヘミングウエイも肥満に悩まされる晩年でした。僕のスリーサイズは92－68－88。水着は学童サイズでOKなので成人用の3分の1の値段です。ヘミングウエイは1954年「老人と海」でノーベル文学賞を受賞しましたが、同年アフリカ・サファリの途中に2度の飛行機事故。後遺症の躁鬱病から61歳で猟銃自殺。

We went on a cruise in Caribbean Sea where Hemingway loved and we went diving in the coral reef under the small island. The coral has almost disappeared and tropical fish is hardly seen. But huge rays and barracudas were swimming slowly and calmly. Both Presley and Hemingway were bothered by obesity late in their lives. My measurements are 92－68－88. A swim suit for a schoolboy is good for me and it costs one third of one for an adult. Hemingway wrote “The Old Man and the Sea” and won the Novel Prize for literature in 1954 but he had 2 airplane accidents in the same year during his safari trips in Africa. He killed himself with his shotgun suffering the sequel of manic-depressive psychosis when he was 61.

ヘミングウエイはキーウエストに1931年から8年間住み、「キリマンジャロの雪」、「持つと持たざると」、「誰がために鐘は鳴る」を書きました。彼が愛した6本指の猫の子孫が沢山住んでいることでも有名です。1000坪ほどの庭は樹木が茂り当時としては珍しい大きなプールがあります。木造2階建ての白い家の内部は豪勢な調度品で飾られていました。彼はこの家で午前中は執筆、午後は魚釣り、夜は酒びたりの生活を送っていたそうです。

Hemingway’s old house

Hemingway lived in Key West for 8 years from 1931 and wrote “Snows of Kilimanjaro”, “To Have and Have Not”, and “For Whom the Bell Tolls”. It is also famous for the place where a lot of six-finger cats; the descendants of the cat he loved are living. The garden is covered with trees and it has a big swimming pool that was rare in those days. Inside of the 2 storied white wooden house was decorated with luxurious furniture. He wrote in the morning, went fishing in the afternoon and spent his life indulging in drinking in this house.

7マイル・ブリッジを渡って米国最南端のキーウエストへ。米国が目の敵にしているキューバは目と鼻の先。海綿と葉巻と砂糖産業でかつては全米一の金持ちの町だったそうです。5階建て以上の高い建物はなく、緑が豊かで、白ペンキ塗りの木造住宅が並ぶのんびりした田舎町です。歴史的建造物が多く、コンチというほら貝が美味と言われています。コンチの刺身や寿司やステーキを食べましたが、アワビのほうが間違いなく美味い。

Crossing 7 Mile Bridge we’ve come to American southernmost, Key West. American sworn enemy, Cuba is only 150km away from here. It was once the richest town in America with its industries of sponges, cigars and sugar. It’s a laid-back local town with no building higher than 5 stories, lots of green and white wooden houses. There are a lot of historical buildings and shellfish called conch taste good. I try its sashimi, sushi and steak, and I would say abalone surely tastes better.

ナッシュビルから飛行機で2時間、マイアミ・ビーチに1週間滞在します。亜熱帯の湿地帯に作られた海辺の避寒地で花と果物が豊富。気候も温暖ですが時に寒波が襲来。ハリケーンの常襲地帯。高層ビルが乱立する人口400万人の大都市で治安も悪い。引退した金持ちと亡命キューバ人が多数住み、英語よりスペイン語が威勢の良い街。

We flew 2 hours from Nashville and we are going to stay in Miami Beach for a week. It is the coastal winter resort built on the subtropical wetland and it is famous for its rich flowers and fruit. It has mild climate but sometimes cold waves attack there. It’s the susceptible area of hurricanes. It’s the big city where skyscrapers shoot up with the population of 4 million and the security is not so good. There are a lot of retired rich people and poor Cuban refugees. Spanish is more spirited than English in this city.
