1978年生まれ、ハリウッドなどの劇中音楽なども手がけるノルウェーの若き天才作曲家、オラ・イェイロが、アメリカを代表する合唱団、フェニックス・コーラルのコンポーザー・イン・レジデンスに就任。そのパフォーマンスを遺憾無く発揮した宗教合唱作品集。


主題に『オーロラ』を冠した、この作品集。凡百のコンセプト・アルバムとは一線を画すのが、欧州の合唱文化において頭一つ抜けたノルウェー伝統と、その風土が育んだ精神性を克明に刻んだ音像の、高純度な結晶と称えられるもの。



静謐で壮麗な響きの中に、北欧の透明で澄み渡った空気感を凝縮したような、精密なハーモニーと計算され尽くした旋律の調和は、あたかも冷たい夜空を焦がしながら、燦然ときらめく星々と大気の共鳴であり、その光を産み出す闇の地平の彼方に浮かぶ、偉大なる太陽の神性を謳う。



"The Ground"を皮切りに、グレゴリオ聖歌を基にした"Ubi Caritus"や、天球の公転をイメージにしたミサ曲"The Spheres"など、イェイロの代表曲である"Sunrise Mass"からの引用も巧妙に配置されている。


"Serenity"も古来のテクスト『オ・マグナム・ミステリウム』に基づく、鏡のような響きと神秘性を湛えたオリジナリティ溢れる楽曲で、作品に藍色の深みと陰影を添えている。対照的に、ラテン・モテット様式による‘Exsultate, jubilate’は、ルネサンス以前の古楽や舞踊曲に通じる牧歌的な陽気さと洗練を兼ね備えた佇まい。



"Dark Night of the Soul"は、おそらく現代音楽の書法に最も近く、おそらくは劇音楽におけるスコアリングの方法論を意識したものとも窺える。16世紀のスペインのカトリック司祭、『十字架のヨハネ』のテキストに基づいた、非常に扇情的な作品である。



特筆すべきは、サックスとピアノを合唱の伴奏に迎えた"Evening Prayer (夕べの祈り）"。テクストはアウレリウス・アウグスティヌスに拠るもの。ヒリヤード・アンサンブルを彷彿とさせる構成ではあるが、器楽演奏はもっとジャズの書法に即したもので、流麗なピアノと現代的な旋律は、Bill Douglasなどのニューエイジ・ミュージック勢や、最近は仮想合唱団プロジェクトなどでも話題を提供したEric Whitacreの作風を強く喚起させるものであり、イェイロの現代音楽家としての位置づけを殊更に裏付ける曲である。
