おもしろそうなテーマだと思ったのだが、何かピンとこないという感想。巻頭 Thomas S. Mullaney による「序言と序説」が、そもそも何を言わんとしているのかよくわからない。こちらの知識不足のせいか。私の第一の関心である、方言と（地域）アイデンティティの関係、および全体（＝漢民族）アイデンティティの関係については、Kevin Carrico が "Recentering China: The Cantonese in and beyond the Han" （本書23-44頁）で取り上げている。しかし結論がやはりよくわからない。何度も読み返さないとだめかな。
