さて、先日初雪が降ったというお話をしたんですが、こちらミネソタも寒くなってまいりました。
I shared that we had the first snow of the season the other day here and yes, it's getting colder and colder in MN.
とはいえ、Hit-chan同様、めいが室内に籠りたいはずがなく、毎日外遊びを催促されております。
Unlike me who loves being lazy in the house, May-chan frequently gets cabin fever and asks me to go out to play every single day.
で、寒くなってくると、暖を取る為にめいの外遊びの時間に庭で焚火をする事がまぁまぁあります。
When it gets colder, I sometimes make a bonfire in the back yard so that I can stay warm while May-chan plays.
そして、寒い中、焚火を見ていると必ず湧いてくる思いが。。。
I actually like watching the beautiful fire shimmering and often come up with this idea.
「焼き芋食べたい。」(笑)
"I wanna eat Bonfire Sweet Potatoes." LOL
過去にも何度か庭で焼き芋が作った事があります。これは初めて作った時で、見た目が日本のサツマイモそっくりだったのですが、味が全然違ったという失敗談。
I've cooked sweet potatoes in a bonfire a couple of times before. This article is about the first time when I accidentally cooked a wrong kind of potatoes which tasted quite different from what I had expected.
こちらは、無事、日本のサツマイモを使っての成功編。
This is about the time when I could make decent bonfire sweet potatoes with Japanese sweet potatoes.
で、先日行ったシカゴ旅行中に立ち寄った日本スーパー、ミツワでサツマイモを見つけまして、「お、これで焼き芋作ろう！」と買って帰りました。
I found Japanese sweet potatoes at Mitsuwa, a Japanese grocery store, in Chicago and "Oh, I can make bonfire sweet potatoes with them!" I got a couple home.
そして、11月上旬のこの日、結構寒くて外遊びを始めたんですが、「うー寒い、焚火しよう！」と急遽決意。
One day on the first week of November, May-chan wanted to play outside and I accompanied her. Though, it's too chilly for me just to sit still, so "Why don't I make a bonfire??" I decided to make a warm and comfy spot for myself.
で、暖を取る為に焚火を始めたんですが、綺麗な炎がユラユラしているのを見ていると。。。
I originally started the bonfire to warm up myself, but as I was watching the shimmering flame...
「うーん、焼き芋食べたい。。。」
"Mmm..., I wanna eat bonfire sweet potatoes!"
と、なりまして、思い付きで焼き芋をする事にしました。
I suddenly made up my mind to make bonfire potatoes.
とりあえず思いついた時点で芋をお水に浸け始めました。
From the point that I came up with the idea, I soaked a potato in salt water.
その間、めいは元気に遊んでおりました。
（ちなみに、めいは小さい頃からHit-chanが焚火をしているのを見ており、「熱いよ！近づいたらあかんよ」と言い続けていたので、今ではもう勝手に焚火には近づいたりはしません。
）
May-chan was playing very active then.
(FYI, I've done a lot of bonfires with May-chan and kept telling her, "It's hot! You can't get close to it!" a million times since she was little, so she doesn't try to get close to the fire on her own.)
この日はベイビー・メレディス（メレちゃん）もいました。完全防寒スタイルです。可愛い～。
We had Baby-Meredith (Mere-chan) on the day too. I made sure to bundle her up good enough. Cute!!
で、しばらく水に浸けたお芋をアルミホイルに包んで。。。
After I had soaked the potato in salt water for a while, I wrapped it with aluminum foil.
いざ、投入。（アルミの色が灰の色と被って見えにくいですが。。。）
Okay, let's do it! (You might have a hard time to find it because the aluminum color matched the ash color.)
で、時々お芋を回しながら、20分弱くらいかな？焼いたところで、火が通っているかチェック。
I rotated the potato every 10mins or so and ended up cooking it for 20mins or so. Then, I poked a tooth pick in it to check if it's cooked.
竹串がスッと通ったので、オッケー！
The tooth pick went through very smoothly and that means it's ready!
中はこんな感じに仕上がりました。ちゃんと火が通っていたけど、あと5分くらい焼いたらもっと香ばしくなって良かったかも。（未来の自分への備忘録）
The inside looked like this. It's cooked through, but I thought that it'd be better to be cooked about 5 mins more to add some smoky flavor to it. (A tip note for myself in the future)
で、早速めいに食べてもらおうとしたんですが、「要らない～！！！」という反応。
Okay then, I tried to give the freshly cooked potato to May-chan, but "I don't want it!" she reacted.
一口でも食べてくれたら甘いから好きになってくれるかも？と思い、「これちょっと食べてくれたらクッキーあげる。」とクッキーで釣ってみたんですが、「要らない～！」と完全拒絶。（涙）
A part of me thought that she might like it once she got a bite because it's sweet, so "I'll give a cookie if you take this little bite!" I baited her with a cookie, but her answer was "I don't want it!" She completely rejected. (Dang!!)
前回は出来立てを喜んで食べてくれたのに。。。結果、Hit-chanが一人で寂しく頂きました。（美味しかったよ。）
She loved it when I made it last though...I ended up eating it all by myself. How sad! (It's yummy though!)
偏食＆食わず嫌いなめいさん。
What a picky eater she is!
いつか一緒に色んなものを「美味しいねぇ～」と言い合える日が来るのでしょうか？(笑)
I wish that we could enjoy eating a same thing and share the delicious happiness together someday! Is it really coming?? LOL
という訳で、結果Hit-chan一人で食べたんですが、久しぶりの焼き芋は良い感じに出来上がりました！
Anyways, even though I had to eat it by myself, the bonfire potato turned out to be yummy this time again!
