団扇（うちわ）椰子

ヨーク半島原産のノース・クインズランド・ファン・パームはケアンズ市役所のマークになっています。樹高2m、葉の直径1m。日陰や水辺に分布。普通の団扇椰子と違って葉身が分裂し破れ傘状になります。葉の形は美しいのに樹高が中途半端なのが残念。市立植物園では階段の横に植えて、上下からも眺められるように配置しています。キュランダでは道路脇の土手の上に列植して下から眺められるように工夫しています。下から見るほうが美しい。

Fan palm

North Queensland Fan Palm originally from Peninsula York is the trademark of Cairns Council. It’s 2m tall and the diameter of its leaf is 1m. They are found in the shadow or the water’s edge. Being different from common fan palms their leaves disrupt like broken umbrellas. The shape of their leaves are beautiful, on the other hand, it’s a shame that they are neither tall nor low enough. In Municipal Botanic Garden they are planted beside the stairs so that people can see them from the top and the bottom. In Kuranda they are planted on the bank so that people can see them from the bottom. They look more beautiful from the bottom than from the top.
