フクロウ、ゴイサギ、ミゾゴイ、ヨタカ、タマシギ、ヤマシギなど夜行性の鳥は鳥類全体の3％。フクロウは肉食で小型の哺乳類や他の鳥類や昆虫などを鋭い爪で捕獲する猛禽類。木の洞穴を住処として単独またはつがいで生活。西洋では「森の賢者」と称され知恵の象徴。日本ではフクロウは死の象徴とされ不吉な鳥とされていましたが、現在では「不苦労」、「福郎」で幸せの鳥に変身。

Nocturnal birds such as owls, night herons, Japanese night herons, nighthawks, painted snipes and woodcocks are 3 % of all birds. Owls are predatory birds that catch small mammals, other birds and insects with their sharp claws. They live alone or in a couple in the cave in a tree. In the West they are the symbol of wisdom and called “the philosopher in woods”. In Japan they used to be the symbol of death and considered to be the ominous birds, but they have turned to the lucky birds, meaning “without troubles” or “happy men”.
