　　わたしは一秒一秒を楽しむつもりです。そして、楽しんでいる間は、そのことを意識していようと思います。たいていの人たちは、生きているのではなく、ただ競争をしているだけ。遥か彼方の地平線にある決勝点にたどりつこうと一生懸命です。そして、そこに行くことに熱中するあまり、息がきれ、あえいでしまって、自分たちがいま通過している、美しく静かな田園風景も目に入らないのです。そして、そのあげくに知ることは、もう自分たちは年老いていて、疲れ果てていて、決勝点に着いても着かなくても、結局、何の違いもない、ということ。わたしは、たとえ大作家になれなくても、道草をして、小さなしあわせをたくさん積み上げることに決めました。

　　I'm going to enjoy second, and I'm going to know I'm enjoying it. Most people don't live; They just race. They are trying to reach some goal far away on the horizon, and in the heat of the going they get so breathless and panting that they lose all sight of the beautiful, tranquil country they passing through; and then the first thing they know, they are old and worn out, and it doesn't make any difference whether they’re reached the goal or not.
