Fifty Types Of Cancer Added To Coverage For 9/11 First Responders.
The announcement that the Federal government added several types of cancer to the list of ailments covered by the World Trade Center Health Program, on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the 2011 terrorist attacks, garnered extensive coverage in television and print. ABC World News (9/10, story 3, 0:30, Sawyer) reported, "Tomorrow is the 11th anniversary of 9/11 and today a quest by some of the first responders ended in a kind of victory. The federal government announced it will add 14 types of cancer to the list of illnesses suffered because of toxins at Ground Zero. Residents of Lower Manhattan and rescue workers will now be eligible for financial aid and health services."
On the CBS Evening News (9/11, LaPook), Dr. John LaPook explained, "Last year the World Trade Center Health Program was granted $1.5 billion over five years to treat and monitor about 40,000 people who worked in toxic conditions following the attacks. The program covers lung diseases, asthma and chronic cough, as well as mental illnesses, such as post traumatic stress disorder and depression but until today not cancer. The decision adds a wide range of cancers to the official roster of World Trade Center related health conditions. The list includes cancer of the lung, breast and colon as well as leukemia and lymphoma."
The AP (9/11) reports that the National Institute for Occupational Safety made the change. NIOSH director Dr. John Howard said in a statement, "The publication of this final rule marks an important step in the effort to provide needed treatment and care to 9/11 responders and survivors through the WTC Health Program."
NBC News (9/11) provides background on the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which until now "did not cover cancer because of a supposed lack of scientific evidence linking cancer to ground zero toxins."
CNN (9/11) reports that the announcement covers 58 types of cancers, in 14 categories.
ABC News (9/11) carries the full list of cancers added to the program.
Also covering the announcement are Reuters (9/11, Begley), FOX News (9/11, Berger), the New York Times (9/11, Hartocollis) "City Room" blog, the New York Daily News (9/11, Durkin), Long Island Newsday (9/11, Ochs), AFP (9/11), BBC News (9/11), and the Daily Mail (UK) (9/11).

September 12 from space: Manhattan spreads a large smoke plume
The dust from the collapsed towers was "wildly toxic", according to air pollution expert and University of California Davis Professor Emeritus Thomas Cahill.[3] The thousands of tons of toxic debris resulting from the collapse of the Twin Towers consisted of more than 2,500 contaminants,[4] more specifically: 50% non-fibrous material and construction debris; 40% glass and other fibers; 9.2% cellulose; and 0.8% of the extremely toxic carcinogen asbestos, as well as detectable amounts of [5] lead, and mercury. There were also unprecedented levels of dioxin and PAHs from the fires which burned for three months.[6] Many of the dispersed substances (asbestos, crystalline silica, lead, cadmium, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are carcinogenic; other substances can trigger kidney, heart, liver and nervous system deterioration. This was well known by the EPA at the time of collapse.[4] A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) funded case report performed by Mt Sinai observed carbon nanotubes in dust samples and in the lungs of several 9/11 responders.[7]
