For a Series Land Rover to survive plodding the Sahara or the Darién Gap is expected. To survive a sixty-year expedition of one-ownership without ever taking a beating deserves a victory parade, streaming confetti and a stiff whiskey shot hoisted all around, and on the house! Cheers to the old bloke, right down to the original toolkit and keys!

This Rover is unique in that it has never been restored, and never lost its soul. It is comprehensive and solid. Almost sixty years old, this one-owner Rover lived a very respected, around-town life on a blue chip Philadelphia estate where other vehicles did the hard chores. A toy, for fun, it remained sheltered and O.E.M. without ever being driven hard and beaten to death. I’m a lifetime mechanic, endlessly busy, running my own shop, and the current safe keeper awaiting a dyed-in-the-wool enthusiast to put the wind back in it’s canvas and continue preservation. The Rover sits in the corner of my garage with a clear, vintage Pennsylvania title the size of a full honors diploma. It’s a new year and I’m getting a jump on spring cleaning.

Bought like a Flexible Flyer, gleaming in red bows, right out of the local dealership window before a threatening snowstorm in 1956, not for scaling the Himalayas, but to ensure continued, perfect attendance at private school for a family of defeated children, grinning in complaining misery.

Now mostly dusty and run regularly being shuffled around the shop, it is original from bonnet to bumper in exceptional condition. At first glance, the painted aluminum body panels are undented, randomly rubbed through, peppered with surface oxidation. The emerald seat cushions have minor tear. The canvas top is snug without cracks and appears to have never been off. The windscreen, side curtains and plastic windows are clear and uncracked. The doors still quietly click. The gate and bonnet still latch without effort. All delicate interior switches and knobs are intact without loss or damage. The spare tire is still in place with the burlap toolkit, jack and cranks at hand. No overdrive or rear bench seats.

Underneath, the steel bulkhead, frame and extensions are surface rusty without the usual rot. The gas engine and drivetrain hold their fluids, showing no excessive weep. It is greasy in all the right spots.

It sits forever and starts immediately, even by hand crank. With no exhaust smoke, it drives straight and taut as expected. It runs through all gears and transfers with ease. No taps, grinds, sputters or stutters. It runs and drives confidently without issue.

It remains largely O.E.M. without modification, with one cosmetic exception for the repainted driver’s side front wing. It has four new tires for safety, current battery and fluids. It is ready and willing.

While Series Rovers are common enough, this truck’s condition and completeness is tough to find. This is an authentic Rover experience for someone more curious than an expensive, time-consuming restoration of mixed parts. Priced more attractively than it’s fully-restored peers, it is available for a reassuring inspection at my auto service shop, and on the lift if desired. There will be no disappointment.
