オーバーランド エッセンス

　僕の様な冒険的自動車旅行の経験が少ないその辺のおやじが、自動車旅行のエッセンス（本質）はこうあるべきだ！などと語っても、

『ぶう～ん』『あっ、そう！』『で？』

で終ってしまい説得力は微塵のかけらも無い。（涙）

 

しかし、しかしだ！

 

　世界で最も、熱い砂漠、寒い両極地、高い高山、ジャングルを四駆で走り回って数多くの実績を持つ自動車冒険家の話ならば、

『あっ、そうかなるほど！ためになります、もっと聞かせて下さい。お願いします。』

と拝聴出来るというものである。

 

 

そこで登場するのが、マックマッケニー氏（Mac Mackenny)

PROFILE:

An experienced expedition leader with professional training and good interpersonal skills. A proven ability to work under both extreme physical and mental pressure in a position of leadership or as a highly motivated team member.

A professionally trained technician on helicopters; vehicles; motorbikes and various generator appliances. A qualified driver, with broad ranging experience from Arctic to Desert conditions in varying types of vehicles. Skilled, versatile, adaptable and resourceful.

Able to operate in arduous conditions, with a background in Arctic operations, Himalayan expeditions and African overland expeditions.

　1996年の英国キャメルトロフィーの代表から始まった彼の実績は数々の自動車による冒険的遠征旅行を執行し成功させたリーダーとして活躍してきた存在である。

彼は自動車冒険旅行の専門家、アドバイザー、そしてオピニオンリーダーである。

 

こういう方の自動車冒険旅行に対するアドバイスならば、

喜んで聞きたいし、受け入れ易い。

 

　その彼が最近英国のLRM 誌が発行した小冊子The Great Outdoor の中でenjoyment （おもしろさ）について語った内容があるので紹介したい。

 

マックさん、数多い自動車冒険旅行の中で一番面白かった、

心に残る旅はどれでしたか？

そうだなぁ、2年間の歳月の準備期間をかけた英国のロンドンから南アフリカのケープタウンの走行、これは結果新記録を更新できたんだけどね、予算もストレスモ高かったので忘れる事は出来ない旅となったな。

 

　そして、一番印象に残っている旅は当時17500マイル（28万キロ）走行距離を刻んだ自分のローバー218サルーンでサハラ砂漠を縦断した時だった。

　自宅からドーバーの港に車を運んでいる時も、『おい、まじかよ！』って感じでね。この使い古した中古車に基本的な整備と工具、そしてリカバリー用品を乗せて、たった一人で（伴走車は無し）。アルジェリアからニジェールを抜けてベニンの港まで5000マイルを駆け抜けて大西洋をこの目で観た時．．．それは感無量であった。
