1977 Land Cruiser FJ40, e-bay Motors
We have a stack of paperwork four inches thick, organized in folders by year documenting the three-year restoration from 2008 to 2010. The total cost exceeded $100,000. The truck was completely disassembled -- this is a true rotisserie, nut-and-bolt restoration and the result is a truck that would be at home in any museum. Every single component on this truck is either new, new old stock or restored to better-than-new standards. No expense was spared, with tremendous attention to detail and hard-to-find parts sourced directly from Japan.
The first thing you notice about this truck is its incredible paint job. Finished in Ferrari Red, you won't find a flaw anywhere on this FJ. The grill surround and top are both clad in correct white, just as it would have rolled out of the factory, and the front bumper is painted in correct pewter. What?s amazing is that the underside of this FJ looks just as goodas the top. The bottom of the tub is finished to the same standard as the topside, and even the frame is painted -- not powder coated -- in a gorgeous gloss black. And of course all emblems, lenses, glass, trim, weatherstripping, rubber, window felts and top seals are new. So many of these trucks end up with chrome EVERYTHING and just look ridiculous. But this one has that tasteful and highly correct look we appreciate at Motorcar Studio.
The interior has been fully restored to better-than-new condition, with the front and rear seats reupholstered in correct vinyl. Door panels, dash pad, seat belts and headliner are all brand new and look great. In keeping with the ultra-high-end paint work elsewhere, the finish quality on the dash, floors and any exposed painted area inside is fantastic. This FJ even comes with a factory toolkit and a factory emergency work light that plugs into a special outlet inside the glove box.
Mechanically, this truck is the best you'll find. The 2F engine has been totally rebuilt and repainted, and the restorer made some choice upgrades while still keeping a very correct stock look. Power steering and factory air were never available for an FJ40, but this truck has a very well executed custom power steering setup. It also has a custom-fabricated a/c system hidden entirely behind the dash, so artfully installed that even where the a/c hoses pass through the firewall looks great. If you didn't already know these trucks were not available with factory power steering and air conditioning, you would never suspect they didn't leave Japan just like this. Of course the transmission, clutch, transfer case and axles were all completely rebuilt as well.
