袴田事件のように冤罪で刑務所にブチ込まれた黒人ボクサー「ハリケーン」

袴田事件で48年も拘束されていた袴田氏が釈放されましたね。

この事件については警察・検察の捜査に証拠ねつ造の疑いがあり、
冤罪だったのではないかというのですが。

袴田氏は元ボクサーということもあり、
この事件でボブ・ディランの「ハリケーン」という楽曲を
思い浮かべた人もいるのではないでしょうか。


この曲は、1960年代のアメリカで、冤罪により約20年、
刑務所にブチ込まれた黒人ボクサー、ルビン・カーターの物語を
歌ったもので、「ハリケーン」はルビンのニックネームです。

このルビン・カーター事件とは、こういうものです。

事件の背景にはアメリカならでわの人種差別があるってところは違いますが、
殺人事件に関して元ボクサーにかけられた冤罪ってことで袴田氏の事件と被ります。


んで、この実話、事件をもとに作られた曲が「ハリケーン」です。

歌詞の内容は事実に即したというか、ディラン自ら取材をして解釈したもの、
らしいのですが、それでもその事実の片鱗というか、
横たわる問題は窺い知れるのじゃないかと思います。


なんと8分以上と曲が長いので歌詞も長いんですが、歌詞はこんなカンジです。

　Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night
　Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall.
　She sees the bartender in a pool of blood,
　Cries out, "My God, they killed them all!"
　Here comes the story of the Hurricane,

　The champion of the world.

　Three bodies lyin' there does Patty see
　And another man named Bello, movin' around mysteriously.
　"I didn't do it," he says, and he throws up his hands
　"I was only robbin' the register, I hope you understand.

　"One of us had better call up the cops."
　And so Patty calls the cops
　And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flash in'
　In the hot New Jersey night.

　Meanwhile, far away in another part of town
　Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin' around.
　Number one contender for the middleweight crown
　Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down
　When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road
　Just like the time before and the time before that.
　In Paterson that's just the way things go.
　If you're black you might as well not show up on the street
　'Less you wanna draw the heat.

　Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops.
　Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowlin' around
　He said, "I saw two men runnin' out, they looked like middleweights
　They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates."
　And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head.
　Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this one's not dead"
　So they took him to the infirmary
　And though this man could hardly see
　They told him that he could identify the guilty men.

　Four in the mornin' and they haul Rubin in,
　Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs.
　The wounded man looks up through his one dyin' eye
　Says, "Wha'd you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!"
　Yes, here's the story of the Hurricane,
　The man the authorities came to blame

　Four months later, the ghettos are in flame,
　Rubin's in South America, fightin' for his name
　While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game
　And the cops are puttin' the screws to him, lookin' for somebody to blame.
　"Remember that murder that happened in a bar?"
　"Remember you said you saw the getaway car?"
　"You think you'd like to play ball with the law?"
　"Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw runnin' that night?"
　"Don't forget that you are white."

　Arthur Dexter Bradley said, "I'm really not sure."
　Cops said, "A poor boy like you could use a break
　We got you for the motel job and we're talkin' to your friend Bello
　Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow.
　You'll be doin' society a favor.
　That sonofabitch is brave and gettin' braver.
　We want to put his ass in stir
　We want to pin this triple murder on him
　He ain't no Gentleman Jim."

　Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
　But he never did like to talk about it all that much.
　It's my work, he'd say, and I do it for pay
　And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way
　Up to some paradise
　Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
　And ride a horse along a trail.
　But then they took him to the jailhouse
　Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

　All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance
　The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance.
　The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums
　To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
　And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger.
　No one doubted that he pulled the trigger.
　And though they could not produce the gun,
　The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed
　And the all-white jury agreed.

　Rubin Carter was falsely tried.
　The crime was murder "one," guess who testified?
　Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
　And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride.
　How can the life of such a man
　Be in the palm of some fool's hand?
　To see him obviously framed
　Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land

　Where justice is a game.
　Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
　Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
　While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell

　そしてベロというもう一人の男は、なぜかうろうろ動き回っている
　「俺はやってない」と彼は言って、両手を挙げる
　「俺はレジの金を盗んでいただけなんだ、分かってくれよ
　奴らが立ち去るのを見たぜ」彼はそう言って立ち止まる
　「俺達のうちの一人が、警察を呼んだほうがいいんじゃないか」
　だからパティは警察を呼ぶ
　そして赤いランプを光らせながら、警官達が現場に到着する
　ニュージャージーの暑い夜の中を

　その間、現場から遠く離れた町の別の場所で
　ルービン・カーターは友達2人と一緒にドライブしている
　カーターはミドルウェイト級1位の男だ
　警官が彼の車を道路脇に寄せたときには
　どんな最悪の事態が自分の身に降りかかろうとしていたのか、まったく知らなかった
　以前もそんなことがあった、その前にもそんなことがあった
　パターソンではそんなことが日常茶飯事なんだ
　黒人は町の通りを歩かないほうがいいのさ
　警官の注意を引きたくなかったらね

　アルフレッド・ベロには相棒がいて、そいつが警察にチクった
　アーサー・デクスター・ブラッドリーと一緒にうろついていたら
　「ミドル級ぐらいの体格の男が二人、走り出てくるのを見た」とそいつは言った
　「二人は他の州のナンバープレートが付いた、白い車に飛び乗った」
　そしてミス・パティ・ヴァレンタインは、ただうなずいた
　「ちょっと待てよ。こいつは死んでないぜ」と警官は言った
　だから彼らは彼を病院に連れて行った
　そしてこの男はほとんど見ることができなかったのに
　「お前は犯人を特定することができるな」と彼らはその男に言った

　朝の4時、連中はルービンを連行する
　彼を病院に連れて行き、二階に上らせる
　傷ついた男は顔を上げ、死にかけている片方の目を通して見る
　「なぜこの男を連れて来たんだ？　この人じゃない！」と彼は言う
　そう、ハリケーンの物語はこうして始まる
　当局が罪を着せた男
　彼が決してやらなかったことに対して
　当局は彼を刑務所の独房に入れた、かつて彼は
　世界チャンピオンにもなれる器だったというのに

　4ヶ月後、ゲットーは燃え上がっている
　南米でルービンは、自分の名をかけて戦っている
　その間、アーサー・デクスター・ブラッドリーはまだ盗みに興じている
　そして警官達は彼に脅しをかけている。罪を着せる誰かを探して
　「バーで起こったあの殺人事件を覚えているか？」
　「逃亡者を見たと言ったことを覚えているか？」
　「法律の味方をしたいと思うだろう？」
　「あのボクサーかもしれないと思うだろう？　
　あの日の夜に走っているのをお前が見たのは」
　「自分が白人だということを忘れるなよ」

　「確信が持てない」とアーサー・デクスター・ブラッドリーは言った
　警官達は言った、「お前みたいな坊やには、休みが必要だな
　モーテルの盗みの件で、お前は挙がってるぞ
　お友達のベロとも話をするからな
　さあ、刑務所に戻ることもないだろう、いい子になれよ
　社会のためにもなるんだぞ
　あの野郎は肝が座ってるし、ますます強気になってやがる
　俺達はあいつをぶち込みたいんだ
　この三人殺しをあいつの仕業にしたいんだ
　あいつは『紳士ジム』じゃないんだぜ」

　ルービンはたった一発のパンチで相手を沈めることができた
　でも彼はそのことを大げさに自慢するのが決して好きではなかった
　「それは俺の仕事だ」と彼は言ったものだ、「金のためにやるのさ
　そして仕事が終わったら、むしろどこかへ行きたいね
　パラダイスにでも行きたいよ
　そこにはマスが泳ぐ川が流れ、空気がきれいなんだ
　そして俺は馬に乗って小道を走るのさ」
　しかしその後、連中は彼を刑務所に送り込んだ
　そこで連中は、一人の男をネズミにしようとするのさ

　ルービンの持ち札はみんな、事前に印を付けられていた
　裁判は茶番劇だった。彼に勝ち目はなかったんだ
　判事はルービン側の目撃者達を、スラムから来た酔っ払いと片付けてしまった
　傍聴していた白人達にとって、ルービンは過激派だった
　そして黒人達にとっては、頭のおかしいただのニガーだった
　彼が引き金を引いたことを、誰も疑わなかった
　連中は凶器の銃を提示することができなかったのに
　検事は、彼がそれをやった犯人だと言った
　そして陪審員の意見は一致した、全員が白人だった

　ルービン・カーターはまやかしの裁きを受けた
　罪状は第「一」級殺人、証言者は驚くなかれ
　ベロとブラッドリーだった、二人ともぬけぬけと嘘をついた
　そして新聞はみんな、流れに乗った
　そんなにすごい男の人生がどうして
　愚か者の手に握られてしまったのか
　彼が明らかにはめられた様を見ると
　この国に住んでいることを恥ずかしく感じずにはいられない
　正義が遊びになってしまった国に

　今や背広を着てネクタイを締めた犯罪者どもがみんな
　好き勝手にマティーニを飲んで、太陽が昇るのを見ているのに
　ルービンは、1辺10フィートの独房でブッダのように座っている
　無実の男が、生き地獄を味わっている
　それがハリケーンの物語だ
　でも連中が彼の汚名を晴らすまで、その物語は終わらない
　そして彼が服役した時間を彼に返すまで
　連中は彼を刑務所の独房に入れた、かつて彼は
　世界チャンピオンにもなれる器だったというのに


こうした偏見や差別、社会の不正義に切り込むボブ・ディラン、
かっこいいですねえ。

しかし、袴田氏が釈放され再審決定のタイミングが、
ボブ・ディラン来日のタイミングと重なる偶然というのがですね、
何とも感慨深いと言いますか。

でも、今回の講演のセットリストに"Hurricane"は入ってないみたいですが。


ついでに、映画にも「ハリケーン」なる作品があったのですね。
知りませんでした。

ルビン役をディンゼル・ワシントンが演じているのですが、
レンタルでもあるみたいなのでそのうち観てみようと思います。


で、ディランみたいに、今の日本であれば、冤罪拘束の疑いの強い、
PC遠隔操作事件を題材に曲を作るアーティストとかいないもんですかねえ。

そしたらかっこいいんですけどねえ、無理なんでしょうねえ。
