my daily life in NZ

New Zealand is a very comfortable country to live in---especially for us Japanese. First, most cars, buses, or trucks running in Christchurch, New Zealand, were used Japanese ones. There were many cars with Japanese words written on their bodies. Besides, you have to drive on the left side of the road as you do in Japan. I was always alone but these Japanese cars running on the left made me feel at home and gave me great comfort. I sometimes forgot that I was in a foreign country. Second, water is good to drink in New Zealand. You can drink unboiled water as you can in Japan.

My daily life in Christchurch started with playing the harmonica. I played old Japanese children's songs which I used to sing in my childhood. After seeing Mr. and Mrs. G (my host family) off to work, I locked up the house and went to the center of the city, Cathedral Square, by bus.

Then I went to the visitor center and got some information as to the place I had planned to visit that day. I visited, watched and enjoyed most of Christchurch during my homestay. I am sure I can show you around the city. Actually, I sometimes helped Japanese ladies who were at a loss where to go, though they were allowed to have much time to enjoy by themselves.

Before coming back to Hare Street where I stayed, I made it a rule to go to an Internet cafe. There were many Internet cafes in Christchurch, because a lot of tourists from foreign countries visited Christchurch for sightseeing. I wrote messages in Japanese on BBS of two Japanese web sites. It cost 3-4 dollars (about 160yen-215yen) an hour.

I was at home by 6:00p.m. and had dinner with my host family---of course, always with red wine. Before going to bed I read a poem 'youth' aloud and tried to memorize it. The poem always gave me courage. It made me calm and I fell asleep without I knew.

You live a full life in Christchurch that your diary reads.
I am relived to hear that water is good to drink.
I think to almost all foreign country does not drink water.

My husband said that you must be attentive in a foreign country.
Let me carry the water!
It’s not safe to carry so much cash around with you!
Do you have a passport?
Be careful about around here.

I would like to go to New Zealand sometime in the near future
