not getting any younger

2017-08-27 20:44:00 | ノンジャンル
I've been enjoying listening to the radio program
ラジオ英会話 for years.

It's my favorite radio program.

The other day I was glad to run across
the following expression:

“I'm not getting any younger.”

This expression sounds better than the one
“I'm getting older,” doesn't it?

Oh, that depends entirely upon the circumstances.

-------------------

Today I went to my hairdresser's.

It's one month since I went to her beauty salon last.

Time really flies!

My hairdresser showed me a comic book titled
“NHK アスリートの魂”, where her daughter
村上茉愛-chan appears!

The comic book has just been published by 学研出版.

村上茉愛-chan is going to Canada late in September
to compete in
2017第47回体操世界選手権 which is held in October.

Do your best, Mai-chan!

Your mother will leave Japan for Canada
to support you on October 2.

Giacometti's world

Yesterday Mrs. M and I met at Shinjuku Station
and went to The National Art Center, Tokyo.
(国立新美術館 at 六本木)

This time we enjoyed Alberto Giacometti's world.
(アルベルト・ジャコメッティ展)

I didn't know anything about him
but got interested in him.

-------------

Giacometti (1901 – 1966) is said to be one of
the most important sculptors in the twentieth century.

The following pictures were allowed to take.

He was seeking after the essential human qualities.
I thought He was a philosopher too.

The exhibition was not so crowded
that we could really enjoy it.

I don't think I did understand Giacometti
but I did enjoy his larger and thinner
sculptures.

Mrs. M and I had a very good day.
Thank you so much, Mrs. M.

unstable weather

On June 7 the rainy season started and
On July 19 the rainy season was over
here in the Kanto region.

We didn't have much rain during the rainy season.

We had sunny and hot weather during the rainy season.

We've had rainy days after the rainy season was over.

It has been humid, which makes me feel very uncomfortable
every day, though the temperature is not so high.

Is autumn approaching?
How I wish for a crisp autumn!

on Mountain Day

2017-08-11 22:11:00 | ノンジャンル
On Mountain Day, I remember two gentlemen
who taught me how wonderful it is to get close
to nature.

We saw eye to eye the first time we met in 2001.

We were all admirers of Rachel Carson,
who was an American scientist and author.

Her books Silent Spring and The Sense of Wonder
are very famous in Japan.

I had never enjoyed hiking before I met them.

I was very weak.
I was skinny.
I was not confident
of my own stamina.

They took me out for a long walk and taught me
how to walk or what kind of shoes I should wear.

Then they took me to Mt. Takao in July, 2001.

Going up Mt. Takao wasn't easy for me.

It was a hard work.

I shall never forget the excitement I felt
when I stood on the top of Mt. Takao and
saw Mt. Fuji or other mountains in the distance.

How nice to be alive!

They invited me to be a member of their Hiking Club.

Oh, what a wonderful time I had!

Thanks to them, I became strong
both in mind and body, I believe.

I am deeply indebted to
Mr. A and Mr. Y.

Mr. Y passed away 9 years ago.
Mr. A passed away last year.

It is 72 years since the dropping of the atomic bomb
on Hiroshima, killing tens of thousands of people.

I watched the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony
on TV.

At 8:15 a.m. I stood up and observed one minute's silence
for the war dead.

I watched the ceremony on TV thinking about world peace
and nuclear weapons.

-------------------------

Typhoon No. 5 is very strong and moving very slowly.

It has caused a heavy rainfall and a violent wind
in Amami-Oshima island and other areas in Kyushu.

Typhoon No. 5 is approaching
Shikoku now.(at 10 p.m.)

We can't tell what will happen.
Let's take care, everyone!
