(in Milano, Italy)
What a beautiful morning! I remember how excited I was when I first went to Europe.
In Europe the cold wave settled in for a long time in the year of 2003. It was much colder than usual by five degrees. In every city I visited, it was much colder than inTokyo. Frost settled on the ground in the morning.
On February 13, 2003 I was in Milano, Italy. It was my first visit to Europe. I heard Milano was called the city of fashions but I was surprised to see all the walls near the airport were scrawled with various dirty phrases. I saw litter and trash here and there.
The cars I saw were all so dirty. The Italian guide told us that the drivers in Europe seldom washed their cars. Few people polished their cars, I heard. It is a big difference from us Japanese. We treat our cars with much care, don't we?
But the bus approached the center of the city, I knew Milano was the fashion center of the world. Walking in the street, I saw many ladies and gentlemen as if from fashion magazines. I felt happy to watch beautiful and attractive displays of goods at stores.
Duomo, a church built in a Gothic style, was amazing. It took about 500 years to complete it. Then I enjoyed walking through the famous sheltered sidewalk to Teatro alla Scala, an opera house. The name Scala is so famous.
I was utterly thrilled, when I watched the wall picture 'The Last Supper' by Leonardo da Vinci at S. Maria Grazie.
