year one in the north

Fortunately I had a chance to see a great movie 'year one in the north' on the day before breaking my left ankle. To tell the truth I did not know about the movie at all except what was written in the paper. I wanted to see Yoshinaga Sayuri in the movie. According to the advertisement in the paper she would celebrate her 60th birthday and the movie was her 111th movie. She was, is, will be one of my favorite actresses.

The movie was more than I had expected. It was three-hour movie and I thought there would be a brief intermission around the middle of it. No, not any intermission. Was I completely exhausted? No. I didn't really mind time. I was not only fascinated with Sayuri's beauty but moved by the story itself. I could not stop tears coming to my eyes.

When I think of the present day, I wonder where the spirit of the Meiji Restoration has gone. The Inada Family, being driven out of Awaji to Hokkaido, lived a harsh, severe and desperate life. Why could they be so strong? Because they believed in something, I think. They believed the day would surely come that their dream would be realized---the dream that the barren wasteland in the north would someday be their paradise. This movie tells us about history, parting, life, perseverance, despair, belief, hope, dream, , betrayal or forgiveness.
