Paul McCartney - Mull of Kintyre 1978

　
　先日ＴＶ番組『欧州鉄道の旅』のスコットランド編を観ていて、車窓の景色をバックに流れていた曲のひとつがWINGSの"Mull of Kintyre"(邦題は夢の旅人)だった。

　調べてみたら、小生が米国に滞在していた頃に売れていたアルバム"London Town"のラストにはいっている。しかし当時米国のＦＭで聴いた記憶がない。しかしイギリスではビートルズ時代の「シー・ラヴズ・ユー」が持っていたそれまでのシングルの売り上げ記録を更新したくらいの大ヒット。現在でもこの記録はエルトン・ジョンのダイアナ妃への追悼歌である"Candle in the wind" に次ぐ２位となっているが日本ではあまり知られていない。

　歌詞の内容はスコットランドのご当地ソングだ。スコットランドにポールが所有している農場がある場所の地名だそうだ。歌詞の内容からは英国版のジョン・デンバーのカントリー・ロードというところか。アコギで奏でられる単純素朴なワルツ、そして後半のバブパイプが重なるとイギリス人ならきっと誰でも目を閉じるとスコットランドの情景が目に浮かぶ。

Mull of Kintyre

glen = スコットランドの深い渓谷。スコッチウイスキーにはGlenで始まるものが多く、鹿の谷を意味するウイスキーGlenfiddichは有名。
heather = スコットランドを代表する紫色の花を咲かせる植物。湿原のヘザーが堆積し半ば炭化したものがピート（泥炭）で、スコッチ・ウイスキー作りの工程で欠かせない燃料＆香りづけに使われる。
