kaki--Japanese persimmon

This year I see kaki-trees, here and there, bearing fruit very well. Kaki brings me back old memories.

When I was a little girl, there was a big kaki-tree in the corner of the back garden. I remember looking up the tree every day on the veranda. It was the tallest tree in the garden.

Mother often said to me, "That kaki- tree was planted by your grandmother. It was a very small tree. But it has grown bigger and bigger. And now its branches are bending low by their load of fruit." What did she want to tell me?

Its leaves were fresh green. They felt very thick. Orange-colored fruits in the green leaves!

I take a kaki-fruit every day for dessert in this season. Kaki-fruits I buy at a supermarket don't have any pips in them. They are not spotted, either. They are soft and easy to eat for my old teeth.

How I miss my grandmother and my parents---who have gone to another world!
