But what surprised analysts most were weaker-than-expected revenue in its seeds business -- primarily due to a timing shift in its Mexico corn business and fewer sales in Latin America, where Argentina has been dealing with drought.

Monsanto has made no secret that Roundup, once the company's primary profit driver, will no longer play a pivotal role in its future growth. Instead, the company is investing in its seeds-trait business to develop next-generation corn, soy and wheat crops that can withstand droughts, pests and herbicides, as well as provide greater yields.
モンサントはラウンドアップの情報を公開しており～つまり特許切れしてるってことでしょうが、それはもはや将来の成長への主要プレイヤーにはなりえない。代わりに、次世代コーンの種子開発に投資しており、次世代コーンは干ばつや、ペストや、除草剤にも耐え、そして収穫量もより大きい。
特許切れのラウンドアップが落ちるのは仕方ないにしても、今後の成長分野の種子でやられては・・・、って感じですかね。次世代がでてくるまで待って、と経営陣は主張している感じですかな。
ちょいとびっくりですが、モンサントはこの半年赤字になってしまっているんですね。
