Procol Harum - A Salty Dog 1969

　例によってNY Timesの死亡記事にKeith Reidの名前を発見。Procol Harumの曲の暗くて難解(enigmatic)な作詞を一手に担っていた人だったんですね。Procol Harumは72年頃だったか大学生の時に大阪で行われたTen Years Afterのコンサートの前座で観たことがある。Procol Harumというと青い影ばかりが有名だが、A Solty Dogというアルバムはなかなか良かった。アルバムのタイトル曲はストリングスも入った荘厳な雰囲気だが、内容は大航海時代の船員の反乱を題材としたもののようだ。

All hands on deck = 甲板に全員集合！
around the horn = 南米のホーン岬(Cape Horn)を指すのではないか。過去には南米を侵略したスペイン軍を唄ったConquistadorという曲も収録してるしね。
We sailed for parts unknown to man = 鉱物資源？
No lofty peak nor fortress bold could match our captain's eye = あるいは軍事上の拠点となる地を開拓するのが目的だったかも。
