Motorola Unveils Android Phone In South Korea

Motorola Inc. said it plans to launch a smart phone in South Korea using Google Inc.'s Android operating platform, a move aimed at taking on Apple Inc. and market incumbents Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. in the fast-growing market.

モトローラが韓国で、グーグルのアンドロイドオペレーションプラットフォームを使ったスマートフォンを販売する計画だそうです。この動きはすばやく成長している韓国マーケットにおけるアップルや、市場を支配するサムスンやLGに対抗するもの。


For almost two years it has tried to spin off its high-profile handset business, which has been without a hit device since the blockbuster Razr phone. The move also comes after Apple said late last year it will make its popular smart phone, the iPhone, available in the South Korean market through an agreement with KT Corp., the country's biggest fixed-line operator by revenue.

レイザー以来ヒットに恵まれないが、良く知られたハンドセットビジネスをスピンオフしようとしてはや2年近くなる。

韓国でのモトローラの動きは、アップルが去年、KTと組んでアイフォンを韓国で製造、販売すると発表した後に出てきたものだ。

According to market research firm iSuppli, Motorola was the fifth-biggest cellphone maker in the third quarter, down from fourth place in the second quarter. As recently as the first quarter of 2007, the company was the world's second-largest cellphone maker after Nokia Corp.

アイサプリによると、モトローラは第3四半期で5番手。第２四半期は4番手だった。07年の第１四半期にはノキアについで2位だった。

ですなあ。モトローラは腐っても2位。大手として君臨してたんですが、今や5番手ですか。5番手ってソニーエリクソンとか、韓国メーカーのポジションだったような気が・・・。

Motorola's Korea representative, Rick Wolochatiuk, said at a press briefing the device would sell for around 900,000 won (US$800). The iPhone retails for around 900,000 won in South Korea market, while Samsung and LG phones are being sold for around 600,000-900,000 won and 700,000 won, respectively.

800＄ですか。結構しますな。アイフォンと同じ価格帯。サムスンとLGはもう少し安い位置。ウーン、アップルアイフォンとモトローラ。同じ値段だったらアイフォンを買うでしょうな、普通は。アンドロイドがどんなに良くてもですなあ・・・。
