日の出町交差点に、観光案内板があります。

先日、私は久しぶりに立ち寄り、熟読してみました。

吉川英治さんの名前を「吉川英次」と誤記していたらしく、それが上書きシールで訂正されていました。

また、大仏次郎さんと吉川英治さんは、少年時代にこの辺りで、すれ違ったかも知れませんね、と書いてありました。

私はお二人の作品を読み、歩いて行ける大仏次郎記念館には年に1〜2度は必ず訪れ、最近では吉川英治さんのご子息の著作「父　吉川英治」も読みました。

The other day I stopped by and perused it for the first time in a long while.

It seems that Eiji Yoshikawa's name had been misspelt as "Eiji Yoshikawa", which had been corrected with an overwritten sticker.

It also said that Jiro Osaragi and Eiji Yoshikawa may have crossed paths around here when they were boys.

I have read their works and always visit the Jiro Osaragi Memorial Museum, which is within walking distance, once or twice a year. 

Recently, I also read a book by Eiji Yoshikawa's son, Father Eiji Yoshikawa.

私は、深夜番組のNNNドキュメント「ある牛飼いの日々」を見ながら、高校時代の日々を鮮明に思い出していました。

番組の舞台は、山口県の梶岡牧場です。

牛飼い農家の3代目、「狂牛病（BSE）騒動の時期は、ステーキハウス経営を含め大ピンチでした。廃業するかしないかで、毎日のように家族喧嘩、すごく苦しかった」と語る梶岡さんの涙にも感動しました。

そんな姿をそばで見てきた娘さんは、獣医学部に進学し父の「命を届ける、命を繋ぐ仕事」を継承するそうです。

梶岡さんは、子牛をたくさん産んだ老牛を屠畜場に送り、屠殺、解体されるまでを娘さんに見せました。

さらに、子どもの頃から、牛の出産に立ち会い、出荷で牛を見送ってきた娘さんに、オス牛の去勢も教えていました。

悲しい出来事、それは帝王切開の場面でした。

梶岡さんは、出産を1ヶ月後に控えた親牛が立てなくなり、子牛を生かすか、子牛は諦め、親牛を屠畜場に送るかの判断を迫られます。

子牛の命を選択し、帝王切開して取り出しました。悲しいことですが、親牛は廃棄されます（もしくはペット用の缶詰）。屠畜場以外で死んだ牛は、食用とならないという法律があるからです。

また、私も実感していたことですが、オス牛の運命は肥育農家によって、少しは生きながらえていることを再認識しました。

わが国でも、かつては乳牛用のホルススタインで、オスが生まれると、すぐに処分されていたそうです。

それが今では、国産牛肉として流通するようになりました。「しょせん、人に食べられるだけじゃないか」と言ったらそれまでですが、「命を届ける、命を繋ぐ仕事」の現実として理解しておきたいですね。

I was vividly recalling my high school days while watching the late-night programme NNN Document "A Cattleman's Days".

The programme was set on the Kajioka Farm in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

The third generation of cattle farmers, "During the mad cow disease (BSE) scare, we were in a big pinch, including our steakhouse business."

 I was moved to tears when Kajioka-san said, "We had family fights every day about whether or not to close the business, and it was very painful."

His daughter, who saw it all from his side, is going on to veterinary school to inherit her father's "work of delivering life and connecting lives".

Kajioka-san sent an old cow that had given birth to many calves to a slaughterhouse and showed her the process of slaughtering and dismantling the cow.

He also taught his daughter how to castrate male cows, having been present at their births and seeing them off for shipment since childhood.

A sad event, was the scene of a caesarean section.

One month before the birth, the parent cow was unable to stand and Kajioka-san had to decide whether to let the calf live or give up on it and send the parent cow to the slaughterhouse.

The calf chose to live and was removed by caesarean section. 

Sadly, the parent cows are discarded (or canned for pets). This is because the law states that cattle that die outside of slaughterhouses are not to be used for food.

I was also reminded that, as I had realised, the fate of the male cattle is kept alive to a small extent by the fattening farmers.

In our country, too, it used to be the Holstein for dairy cattle, and when a male was born, he was immediately disposed of.

Now they are distributed as domestic beef. 

It would be wrong to say that the beef is just for people to eat, but it is important to understand that this is the reality of the work of delivering and sustaining life.

Today, my little drink of the day was a sweet and spicy Kagoshima pumpkin, and I made myself some fried shishito peppers with miso, and drank a good can of beer.

This morning's walk, I'm sending you a shot of coolness.

今朝、私は1人スポーツカラオケ🎤に行く途中、大岡川沿いの地上で動くものを目にしました。

大きめのムカデでした。思わず、その姿が愛おしくて写真を1枚撮らせていただきました。でも、部屋の中にいたら嫌ですね。

大岡川沿いに、小型のひまわり、盛りを過ぎたクチナシが咲いていました。

1人スポーツカラオケ🎤、朝うた2時間半、ジョッキのアイスミルクティー付きで、税込326円でした。

This morning I was on my way to a one-person sports karaoke🎤 when I saw something moving on the ground along the Ooka River.

It was a large centipede. I couldn't help but love the sight of it and took one photo. But I wouldn't like it if it was in my room.

Along the Ooka River, small sunflowers and gardenias were in bloom.

One person sports karaoke🎤, 2.5 hours of morning songs, with a mug of iced milk tea, cost 326 yen including tax.

午後、私はずっと書類や雑誌、本の整理をしていました。

捨てるに捨てられず、そして、これからも捨てられない小冊子6冊は、国会図書館へ納本することにしました。ナイスアイデアだと、私は思いました。

「現代の解読」第2号と3号は、私たちはが若い頃に自費出版しました。1号と4号は見当たりません。5号は、ずっと以前、国会図書館へ納本済みで公開されています。

専売公社関係の冊子は、私が若い頃にスタッフとして関わりました。懐かしく、恥ずかしい気持ちもありますが、納本しておけば「いつか、一人でも閲覧してくれるだろう」と思います。

All afternoon I have been sorting through papers, magazines and books.

I decided to deliver six booklets that I couldn't and won't throw away to the Library of Congress. 

Nice idea, I thought.

The second and third issues of Modern Deciphering were self-published when we were young; the first and fourth issues are missing; the fifth issue has long ago been delivered to the National Diet Library and is now available to the public.

I was involved in the staffing of the booklets related to the Monopoly when I was a young man. 

I feel nostalgic and embarrassed, but I think that if I deliver the books, "one day, one of them will be viewed".

今日、早々と梅雨明けが宣言されました。観測史上最も早く、関東圏に夏が来ました。私は、東京でOB会のお手伝いをして、午後5時過ぎに横浜に着きました。

買い物の帰り、シロツメクサの原っぱを歩き、私は童心にかえりました。

帰宅して、きゅうりと大葉の浅漬けを作りました。

そして、私たちのちょい飲み夕飯は、横浜橋商店街「豊野」の野菜天ぷらの天丼などでした。

The end of the rainy season was declared earlier today. Summer has arrived in the Kanto region earlier than any other time in recorded history. I arrived in Yokohama a little after 5pm after helping out at an alumni meeting in Tokyo.

On my way home from shopping, I walked through a field of white clover and was transported back to my childhood.

When I got home, I made pickled cucumber and shiso leaves. 

And our little drinking supper included vegetable tempura tendon at Toyono in the Yokohama Bridge shopping arcade.

本日、私のランチは久しぶりの黄金町駅前「サンポポラ」でした。

590円のチキンサンドセットを待ちながら、私はブレンドコーヒーを飲みました。

コーヒーゼリーとプリン🍮まで付いて、590円のランチセットは、とても安いですね。カレーセット🍛、ナポリタンセットも同じお値段です。

帰路、私は古書店で100円の本を3冊買い、業務スーパーで夕飯の食材など買いました。

Today, my lunch was at Sampopola, in front of Koganecho Station, for the first time in a long time.

While waiting for my 590 yen chicken sandwich set, I had a cup of blended coffee.

With coffee jelly and even pudding🍮, the 590 yen lunch set is very inexpensive. 

The curry set 🍛 and the Neapolitan set are the same price.

On the way home, I bought three 100 yen books at a second-hand bookshop and some ingredients for dinner at a supermarket.

昨年、東京オリパラの時に、熱中症対策のグッズとして配布された首巻き手ぬぐいです。

今日はとても暑かったので、私は試しにこの手ぬぐいを使ってみました。

首筋がひんやりとして、私はこれからのシーズンの散歩に使ってみようと思いました。

These neck-wrapping tenugui were distributed last year during the Tokyo Oripara as goods to prevent heat stroke.

It was very hot today, so I tried using this tenugui as a trial.

It felt cool on my neck and I decided to use it for my walks in the coming season.
