帰りに郵便受けを開けたら、90歳のOB会先輩からのハガキが届いていました。
私は、立ち止まってハガキを読みました。彼は34歳の時に、民間交流団の一員として、5カ国の社会主義国を1か月かけて歴訪したそうです。
そして、彼は現在のウクライナ🇺🇦情勢を悲しみ、ソフィアローレン主演の「ひまわり」に思いを馳せているのです。
思うように動かない身体なのに、行動しなくてはならないと、近くの街路樹にひまわりの種を蒔いたそうです。
なお、大先輩・平田さんからのハガキに書いてあった全文は、次の通りです。私はとても感動しました。

お懐かしゅうございます、お変わりございませんか。すっかりのご無沙汰をお許し下さい。
歴史は繰り返すといいます。 出口の見えないコロナとプーチン軍のウクライナ侵攻。三十四歳の若き時代、日ソ平和国際親善交流に日本の公労協6名の代表団の一員に選ばれて一か月、ロシア・ウクライナなど五共和国を回った愚生、彼の地の平和と友の安否を思い、やりきれない憂鬱な日々であります。せめてもの思いで街路樹の下にウクライナの国花「ひまわり」の花の苗を植え、ソフィアローレン主演、伊・仏・ソ・米合作の映画「ひまわり」を偲んでいます。「ひまわり」は反戦平和の花です。
今、九十路(ここのそじ)を歩む愚生、進む足腰の劣化にめげず、両足踏ん張って杖を友に、今を精一杯生きています。
しかし残念ながらお家巣ごもりで遠出が苦痛となり、「あの友・この友、貴方様を思い」語りべたらんと自分史書きを楽しんでいます。貴方様の健康長寿を祈り、ご機嫌のお伺いと近況のご報告まで 変わらぬ友情と平和の固い握手を。

Rainy day in Yokohama. I wanted to eat cream buns. With an umbrella ☂️I went to a nearby Famima.
On my way home, I opened the mailbox and found a postcard from a 90 year old senior member of the alumni association.
I stopped and read the postcard. He told me that when he was 34 years old, he spent a month visiting five socialist countries as a member of a private exchange group.
And he was saddened by the current situation in Ukraine🇺🇦 and thought of "Sunflowers" starring Sophia Loren.
He sowed sunflower seeds on a nearby roadside tree because he felt he had to act despite his body not moving as much as he wanted.
The following is the full text of the postcard from Mr. Hirata, a senior member of the company. I was very moved.

It has been a long time since I have seen you. Please forgive my complete absence.
They say history repeats itself. Corona with no way out and Putin's invasion of Ukraine. As a young man of 34 years old, I was selected as a member of a six-member delegation of the Japan Federation of Trade Unions to the Japan-USSR Peace and International Friendship Exchange Program, and for a month I toured five republics including Russia and Ukraine. I planted a seedling of Ukraine's national flower, the sunflower, under a roadside tree in memory of the movie "Sunflowers," starring Sophia Loren and co-produced by Italy, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States. The sunflower is the flower of anti-war peace.
I am now walking on my ninetieth birthday, and I am living my life to the fullest with my legs and back deteriorating, and with a cane as a friend.
Unfortunately, however, I am confined to my house, and it has become painful for me to travel far away from home, so I am enjoying writing my own history so that I can talk to "that friend, this friend, and you". I wish you a long and healthy life, and to hear from you, a firm handshake of friendship and peace.
