昨今は泣かせる映画や恐がらせる映画が大流行だが、この映画は最後に泣き笑いを誘う。サスペンス・スリラーにもかかわらず、恐がらせるだけのストーリーよりも高度な技だ。だから、たぶんこの映画を観る人やその心の状態などで、観たあとの印象が異なってくると思う。いくつかの伏線が引かれており、結末に向かって一つの線になっていく。エンドロールで赤ちゃんを守り最後に抱かせてもらえるシーン。エマが、「Come on, Solomon」と下の部屋へ誘うシーンは恐い映画にもかかわらず泣けた。
人を陥れることが非常に容易で、最小限のたくらみが最大の効果を上げていく。その過程が怖ろしかった。誰にでも簡単に出来る小細工が、幸福そのものの家庭を破壊していくのだ。あのような復讐にペートンを駆り立てたのは、自分から幸福を奪った憎しみだけでなく、満たされることのない母性愛が屈折してしまったことによる。彼女の復讐は計画的かつ陰湿だが、赤ん坊に母乳を与えているシーンや最後まで子供二人を攻撃することはないペートンなどを見ると、やりきれない思いが強い。良妻賢母になったであろう彼女を復讐の鬼に変えてしまった不条理な現実に暗澹たる気持ちにさせられてしまうのだ。
ゆりかごを揺らす手は世界を支配する。
アメリカの詩人、William Ross Wallace の詩のタイトルだ。映画の中で、この一節を口にするのは、マーリーン役のジュリアン・ムーアだが、あっさり殺されてしまう……。 実際の詩は、「すばらしき母性」を讃える言葉がえんえんと続いていく。
