When FC Dallas hit the practice field on Monday morning for its first training session of the second week of preseason, there was a new face among the mix of players. That face belongs to Ryuta Sasaki, a 24-year-old striker from Japan who was most recently playing in that country’s second division.
Here’s the rundown on the guy FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman refers to as “Sasa”.
“We’ve never had a Japanese player over here on trial and I thought it would be nice not just to look at the player but also evaluate that level of play because I’m always invited over there to look at players, like a combine or something and it never seemed to fit into the schedule.” Hyndman said. “So he arrived Saturday so now he’s just getting his legs under him. We’ll get a better opportunity to evaluate him as the week goes on but we’ll have him here for a week.”
As for where he can play on the field, it definitely is at a current place of need for the club.
“Striker/second striker, it’s what we need,” Hyndman said. “The one thing I know about the Japanese players having done clinics there is they’re very technical, have good work ethics. The thing that they kind of fall on a little bit is tactics. We’ll see.”
