San Jose Earthquakes: Tressor Moreno might be Quakes' new playmaker

The Earthquakes may have finally found their maestro in the middle in veteran Tressor Moreno.
The 33-year-old looked good in camp this week while auditioning for a roster spot.
A Colombian national team player from 2000 to 2007, Moreno's extensive résumé includes time with Mexican clubs Necaxa, CD Veracruz and San Luis. He also played professionally in Peru, Colombia, Brazil, France and Chile.
"He's an experienced No. 10," Quakes general manager John Doyle said. "He distributes the ball well. He can find players. He makes everyone around him better.
"Our big concern in bringing him in is he just turned 33," Doyle added. "We want to make sure that he's physically fit and healthy. If he passes those hurdles, then we'll probably make him an offer."
Since their return in 2008, the Quakes have searched for a smooth operator in the middle, a tempo guy with enough pace to survive in the rough-and-tumble MLS.
They thought they had their man in Brazilian international Andre Luiz, 37, who is attempting another comeback. But he's been dogged by a left-knee injury.
Moreno, who is 5-foot-71/2, likes the fit so far.
"I feel my experience can definitely help bring tempo to the team," he said using an interpreter. "I can also help bring out the best in the players and the players the best out of me. I'm really motivated. I really want to play in MLS, and I see this as a great opportunity."
Moreno,

who played for the Chilean team Santiago Wanderers in 2011, said he expects to be match fit in about two weeks.
"It's going very well," he said. "They have a lot of good players. I can clearly see that the team is wanting an identity and trying to do that with the group of players that they have."
With the return of flashy Simon Dawkins from England still up in the air, the Quakes are hedging their bet by loading up on midfield prospects.
"That's the reason," Quakes coach Frank Yallop said. "We don't want to get caught with our pants down. If Simon's out, we'll be ready to go, but even so we think we can fit it all in, even with Simon. I'm hoping he signs, so we'll see."
Dawkins, 24, who was on loan last season from Tottenham Hotspur, and Moreno have different playing styles.
"Simon wears No. 10, but Simon, for me, is more of a second forward, a wide midfielder," Doyle said. "He's more of a dribbler that plays one-twos and gets it in the box. Moreno is more of a guy that's going to divide the game."
Also impressing as camp trialists are Japanese midfielders Mitsuo Ogasawara and Masashi Motoyama, both 32, who played for J. League power Kashima Antlers in 2010.
Both played for the Japanese national team. Ogasawara competed in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
"They want to come to MLS, and both are good players," Yallop said. "It's about: Are we signing them? We'll see. I like both guys. Both have shown pretty well."
The club announced Thursday it signed Turkish forward Sercan Guvenisik, who played for SC Peussen Muenster of the Bundesliga 3.
"We had him on trial last year and followed him ever since," Yallop said of Guvenisik on MLSSoccer.com. "He's an intelligent, experienced player who should help with the depth on our squad."
Also in camp is offseason acquisition Victor Bernardez of Honduras.
The Quakes' top draft pick, Sam Garza (No. 6 overall), is turning heads with his speed and versatility.
"Sam Garza has got quality, we know that," Yallop said of the former UC Santa Barbara star. "When you watch him play he glides around the field nicely and has got a very good first touch, a very good turn of pace to play multiple positions, either at flank or up front. He looks like a very good young player."
The Quakes will complete training in San Jose on Friday before heading to Tucson, Ariz. on Monday. They will also train in Ventura (Feb. 12-18) and Portland (Feb. 26-March 5), before hosting New England on March 10 to open the MLS season.

Frank Yallop
