8 關係代名詞 what
關係代名詞 what について Michael Swan は次のやうに説明して、例文を擧げてゐます。
What does not refer to a noun that comes before it. It acts as noun+relative pronoun together, and means ‘the thing(s) which’. Clauses beginning with what can act as subjects, objects, or complements after be.
What she said made me angry. (subject of made)
I hope you’re going to give me what I need. (object of give)
This is exactly what I wanted. (complement)
（what は先行する名詞について説明する（/名詞に言及する）のではない。what は名詞と關係代名詞とを合はせた働きをし、‘the thing(s) which’（「～であるもの/こと」）を意味する。what で始まる節は、主語、目的語、あるひはbe動詞のあとで補語となる。（※例文の意味は順に「彼女が言つたことが私を怒らせました」「私が必要とする物をあなたがくれると良いんですが」「これこそ正に私が欲しかつたものです」）
また決定詞（ determiner 限定詞とも）としての what の例文も掲げてゐます。
What money he has comes from his family. (= The money that he has …)
I’ll give you what help I can. (=…any help that I can.)

what については、疑問詞か關係代名詞か區別がむつかしいことがあります。主節の意味合ひや動詞などを手がかりにしで判斷しますが、文脈で判斷しなければならない場合もあります。
8.1 I asked him what I should do next.（疑問詞： 次は何をしたら良いか彼に訊ねた）
8.2 I believe what you say.（關係代名詞： あなたの言ふことを信じます）
8.3 I don’t remember what he said to me.（文脈で判斷： 彼が私に 言つたこと / 何と言つたか 覺えてゐない）
歌では Eddie Hodges の『コーヒー・デイト』に關係代名詞の what が使はれてゐます。アメリカでは『恋の売りこみ(I’m Gonna Knock On Your Door)』に續くレコードで、1961年に發賣されましたが、日本では『コーヒ―・デイト』のはうが先行し、昭和37年に彼のデビュー曲となりました。「コーヒー」や「デイト」といつたことばがまだ新鮮な響きを持つてゐた時代…うまい邦題をつけたものです。
日本では『雨のち晴（Rainin’ In My Heart）』（昭和38年）あたりを最後に次第にラヂオで耳にすることもなくなつてゆきましたが、その後 New Orleans といふ曲を吹き込んでゐます。YouTubeなどで eddie hodges new orleans shindig と打ちこんで檢索すると 1965年頃音樂番組 Shindig に出演した折のライヴ映像を樂しむことができます。
扨て、關係代名詞の what を聽いてみませう。YouTube などの檢索バーに打ち込むのは eddie hodges mugmates です。

下線部に what があります。先行詞を含んでゐて「～こと/もの」の意味ですから、意味は「（コーヒー・ショップで會はう、そしたら）ぼくらは誰もがすることをするんだ」といふことになります。
