What exactly is happiness? We all want it. We all strive for it. Even the Dalai Lama has said: “The very purpose of life is to seek happiness.” But what exactly is it?

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English では、used for giving force to an expression といつた説明を掲げ、いくつか用例を擧げてゐます。
やや古めかしい使ひ方として 1.4.1 「眞の」「まつたくの」といふ意味があり、この文脈ではこれに近い意味で使つてゐるやうに思はれます。ほかにも 1.4.2 「正にその」「丁度その」と強調する場合があり、1.4.3 「單に～だけで（=mere）」「～でさへ（=even）」といつた意味に使はれることもあります。

1.4.3 「單に～だけで」 の用例としてもうひとつ、古い歌を紹介しませう。1958 年（昭和33年）にNat ‘King’ Cole が歌つた The Very Thought Of You です。日本では『君を想いて』といふタイトルで紹介されました。拙宅には Nat ‘King’ Cole のレコードしかありませんが、それ以前にも Doris Day や Bing Crosby などが歌つてゐたやうです。YouTube をさがしてみるとそれらも聽くことができました。
