15 複合關係副詞： wherever / whenever / howeverなど
① any の意味を帶びる場合 ②讓歩の意味を帶びる場合 のふたつがありますが、根は同じですし共に副詞節を形成しますから、意味やはたらきは近いやうに思はれます。このため①②のいづれにもとれる場合があります。
15.1 any の意味を帶びる場合： 副詞節を形成し、主節に添へられます。例へば、wherever は「～はどこでも」（= at/in/to any place where ～）、また whenever は「～するときはいつでも」（= at any time when ～）といつた意味になります。
[例文]
15.1.1 He gets lost wherever he goes.
彼は行くところどこででも道に迷ふ/どこへ行つても道に迷ふ。
= He gets lost in any place he goes.
15.1.2 Come whenever it is convenient for you.
いつでもあなたの都合の好いときに來なさい。
= Come at any time when it is convenient for you.
15.2 讓歩の意味を帶びる場合： 副詞節を形成して主節に添へられ、讓歩の意味を傳へます。例へば、wherever は「どこへ～しても」（= no matter where ～）、whenever は「いつ～しても」（= no matter when ～）、また however は「どんなに～しても」（= no matter how ～）といつた意味になります。この讓歩の文では no matter ～のはうが口語的、また讓歩節のなかで助動詞 may を使ふのは文語的とされます。
[例文]
15.2.1 Wherever you go, you’ll find Coca-Cola.
どこへ行つても、コカ・コーラがみつかるだらう。
= No matter where you go, you’ll find Coca-Cola.
15.2.2 Whenever I call, he is not at home.
いつ電話しても、彼は家にゐない。
= No matter when I call, he is not at home.
15.2.3 Phone me when you arrive, however late it is.
どんなに遲い時刻でも、着いたら電話してくれ。
= Phone me when you arrive, no matter how late it is.
Petula Clark の Chariot に新たに歌詞をつけた 『アイ・ウィル・フォロー・ヒム』は1963年にヒットしましたが、その歌詞に讓歩の wherever があります。當時15歳だつた Little Peggy March が歌ふ I Will Follow Him の第一聯はこんな案配です。
I will follow him, follow him wherever he may go
There isn’t an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep me away
私は彼について行く、彼が何處に行かうともついて行く
（彼について行けないほど）深過ぎる海はないし、
私を（彼から）ひき離しておけるほど高い山もない
（※2行目の too deep の後に for me to follow him を補つて解します。3行目は There isn’t a mountainと補ひ、さらに so high の後に that を補つて解します。2012年7月27日付拙稿・慶應義塾大學 3.4 にあつた「程度」を意味する文です。 too deep や so high ～が前の名詞の説明として後置されてゐます）
2012年8月1日に紹介した Connie Francis のアルバムには1963年の曲『渚のデイト』が收められてをり、そのなかにも wherever があります。原題は Follow The Boys です。第一聯と第二聯はこんな案配です。
① I’ll follow the boys wherever they go
I’ll follow the boys 'cause in my heart I know
I know that somewhere, somewhere along the way
I’ll find my love, my own true love, some day
There’ll be no place too far, no ocean too wide
② Wherever he goes I’ll be right by his side
I’ll follow the boys and wait until the time
Till that boy that I’m following is mine
①男の子たちが行くところどこへでもついて行くわ/男の子たちがどこへ行かうと私はついて行くわ
②彼がどこに行かうと、私は彼のすぐ傍にゐるのよ/彼が行くところどこででも彼のすぐ傍にゐるのよ
同じアルバムに收められた1961年のヒット曲『夢のデイト』には whenever があります。原題は Someone Else’s Boy です。YouTube等の檢索バーに connie francis someone else’s boy と打ちこんで動畫を檢索します。

彼は彼女のボーイフレンドだから忘れなくてはいけないとわかつてゐるんだけど、私に何ができるでせう？（自分ではどうにもできない）
