11 關係副詞 when の文構造
前囘の關係副詞 where の項ではMichael Swan の記述と例文を紹介しました。when についての記述や例文もありましたが、今囘は他の文法書を覗いてみませう。Martin Hewings は Advanced Grammar in Use. 2nd ed. のp. 108で、
We can begin relative and other clauses with when (referring to time), whereby (method or means; used mainly in formal contexts), and where (location). In formal English in particular, a phrase with preposition + which can often be used instead of these （時に言及する when 、主として形式ばつた文脈で、方法や手段に言及する whereby、場所に言及する where で、關係詞節などを始めることができる。特に正式の英語では、これら（の關係副詞）ではなく、前置詞＋which といふ表現がしばしば使はれる）
と述べ、例文を擧げてゐます。 when の例文を紹介しませう。
He wasn’t looking forward to the time when he would have to leave. ( or …the time at which …)
Do you know the date when we have to hand in the essay? ( or … the date on/by which …)
例文の意味は「彼は去らねばならぬ時を豫期してゐなかつた」「論文提出の締切日を知つてるかい？」です。
關係副詞 where とwhen には先々週解説した「ふたつの用法」があります。上の例文は限定用法ですから、繼續用法の when の例文を紹介しておきませう。繼續用法では、先行詞や關係副詞が省略されることはありません。
11.1 April, when a new school year starts, is an important month to teachers. （４月は新しい學年が始まるので、教師にとつては重要な月である）
關係副詞 where/when/why の代はりに that が使はれることがあります。the way that といつたかたちもあります。これらの that は省略されることがあります。
先行詞が the time の時に關係副詞 when が省略されることがありますが、その例はあとで Smile といふ歌で紹介いたします。
また先行詞が省略される場合もあり、次のやうなかたちになります。
11.2 The best time to visit Japan is when the cherry blossoms are out. （日本を訪れる一番良い時は、櫻の花が咲く頃です）
關係副詞 when が使はれてゐる歌詞としては、1963年（昭和38年）頃流行した『悲しきハート』の第二聯に、
There’ll be times when I won’t be there
があります。原題は Lock Your Heart Away で、Susan Singer といふ當時16歳のイギリスの歌手が歌つてゐました。
その前年には『悲しきクラウン』が流行しましたが、その歌詞に關係副詞としての that が使はれてゐます。第二聯に、
I’ve been sad, I’ve been blue
Ever since the day that you found someone new
といつた歌詞が見えます。YouTube などの檢索バーに neil sedaka king of clowns と打ちこむと樂しむことができます。
さて、關係副詞省略の例として、喜劇王 C. Chaplin 作曲の Smile を眺めてみませう。多くの歌手が歌つてゐますが、今囘紹介するのは Neil Sedaka が1961年に吹込んだものです。neil sedaka smile で檢索します。

Smile even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky you’ll get by

You’ll find that life is still worthwhile if you just smile
the time の後に when を補つてみると、「（何かを）やつてみ（ることを）續けなくてはいけない時なんだ」といつた意味が傳はつてきます。
各聯の一行めと二行めに脚韻をふんでゐますが、他にも sky と by、through と you、face と trace、tear と near、find と life, worthwhile, smileなども音を揃へて美しい響きをかもしてゐます。曲が先に作られ、後から（1954年）歌詞がつけられたと聞きますが、隨分と凝つたつくりになつてゐます。
