この本は、ペンシルヴェニア州立大学のアラン・ウォーカー（Alan WALKER）さんとリチャード・リーキー（Richard LEAKEY）さんが、1984年にケニアのトゥルカナ湖西にある、ナリオコトメ遺跡で発見した、ホモ・エルガステル（Homo ergaster）の子供の全身骨格、KNM-WT15000を記載したものです。原題は、『The Nariokotome Homo erectus Skeleton』で、1993年に、ハーヴァード大学出版から出版されました。
このKNM-WT15000とは、ケニア国立博物館所蔵西ツゥルカナ湖遺跡出土15,000番という意味です。

このKNM-WT15000は、約160万年前の約11歳から15歳のホモ・エルガステルの少年だと考えられています。体重約47kg・身長約1.5mで、成人すれば、体重約68kg・身長約1.8mに達したと推定されています。
