　著者のジョン・ロビンソンさんは、1940年代にロバート・ブルーム（Robert BROOM）［1866－1951］さんと一緒に南アフリカで多くの古人類化石を発見しています。本書は、南アフリカのスタルクフォンテイン、スワルトクランス、クロムドラーイ遺跡等から出土したアウストラロピテクス・アフリカヌスやパラントロプス・ロブストスの四肢骨について記載と分析がされており、大変、参考になります。ただ、本書では、ホモ・アフリカヌス（Homo africanus）という学名が使用されていますが、一般的にはアウストラロピテクス・アフリカヌス（Australopithecus africanus）が使用されていることに注意が必要です。

人類進化の洋書５７．オルデュヴァイ峡谷４（Olduvai Gorge4）

　この本は、南アフリカにある元ウィットウォタースランド大学の人類学者、フィリップ・トバイアス（Phillip TOBIAS）［1925－2012］さんが、アフリカのタンザニア、オルデュヴァイ峡谷出土古人骨の内、ホモ・ハビリス（Homo habilis）について記載したものです。原題は『Olduvai Gorge』で、直訳すると「オルデュヴァイ峡谷」となります。このシリーズの第4巻として、1991年にケンブリッジ大学出版から出版されました。アマゾンで検索しましたが、ヒットしませんでしたのでリンクさせていません。

　本書は、オルデュヴァイ峡谷出土のホモ・ハビリス［OH: Olduvai Hominid］について、記載がされており、全921ページにも及びます。特に、OH13・OH16・OH24について詳細に記載されています。古人類には、例えばエチオピアで発見されたアウストラロピテクス・アファレンシスの全身骨格には「ルーシー」というニックネームがつけられる場合が多いのですが、本書でも、「ツウィッギー：OH24」・「シンデレラ：OH13」・「ジョージ：OH16」とニックネームがつけられています。古人類学の必読書の1冊です。ちなみに、このホモ・ハビリスの最初の記載は、1964年に、ルイス・リーキー（Louis LEAKEY）［1903－1972］、フィリップ・トバイアス、ジョン・ネイピア（John NAPIER）［1917－1987］の3人の人類学者により、科学雑誌『Nature』に発表されています。但し、本書が出版された時は、すでに共著者2人は死去していました。
