この本は、アメリカの民族考古学者、ルイス・ビンフォード(Lewis BINFORD)[1930-]さんが、民族考古学から見た骨について書いたものです。原題は、『Bones: Ancient Men and Modern Myths』で、1981年に、アカデミック・プレス(Academic Press)社から出版されました。
ビンフォードさんは、ノース・カロライナ大学とミシガン大学で教育を受け、長年ニューメキシコ大学に勤務ていた方です。戦後は、沖縄で米軍の通訳をしていた時期もあったそうです。

ビンフォードさんは、現代の狩猟民を調査し、狩猟動物の解体法や解体の際についた傷(カッティング・マーク)を詳細に記録した上で、その知識を遺跡出土獣骨に応用して分析しており、動物考古学に大変、参考になります。
