　著者のオルセンさんは、アメリカにおける動物考古学の創始者の一人で、多くの骨学の教科書を書いている方です。著名な古生物学者のアルフレッド・シャーウッド・ローマー（Alfred Sherwood ROMER）［1894－1973］の助手として骨学の研鑽を積み、その後、フロリダ州立大学やアリゾナ大学で動物考古学の教鞭をとっていました。

　この本は、アメリカの民族考古学者、ルイス・ビンフォード（Lewis BINFORD）［1930－］さんが、民族考古学から見た骨について書いたものです。原題は、『Bones: Ancient Men and Modern Myths』で、1981年に、アカデミック・プレス（Academic Press）社から出版されました。

　ビンフォードさんは、ノース・カロライナ大学とミシガン大学で教育を受け、長年ニューメキシコ大学に勤務ていた方です。戦後は、沖縄で米軍の通訳をしていた時期もあったそうです。

　この本は、アメリカの動物考古学者のスタンリー・オルセン（Stanley John OLSEN）［1919－2003］さんが、遺跡出土魚類・両生類・爬虫類の同定法について書いたものです。1968年に、ハーヴァード大学ピーボディ博物館から出版されました。

　本書は、長年、南アフリカの洞窟でアウストラロピテクス・パラントロプス等の初期人類の遺跡から出土する獣骨の研究に従事した内容がつまった本です。私は、アメリカ留学中に購入して読みましたが、特に衝撃的だったのはヤマアラシが骨を集めるということでした。フクロウが、消化できない獲物の骨や毛をペリットとして吐き出すことは有名ですが、どれも、小動物のものです。ところが、ヤマアラシは、結構大きな骨をランダムに集めているようで、人類が食べた痕跡として見間違えられることもありうることになります。

　この本は、元大英自然史博物館の古生物学者、ピーター・アンドリュース[Peter ANDREWS]さんがイギリスの洞窟出土小哺乳動物について書いたものです。原題は、『Owls, Caves, and Fossils』であり、1990年に大英自然史博物館やシカゴ大学出版から出版されました。

　本書の内容は、以下のように全7章からなります。

　付録

　著者のアンドリュースさんは、私もお会いしたことがありますが、細身で眼鏡をかけたイギリス紳士という雰囲気を持つ方です。霊長類化石や哺乳類化石を専門とされていました。また、古人類学者のクリス・ストリンガーさんと組んで、現代人のアフリカ起源説の論文も書いています。

　本書の内容は、主に、フクロウが食べた獲物の内、消化できない骨や毛を吐き出すペリットの分析がメインです。私も参加させていただきましたが、東京大学（現高地工科大学）の赤澤　威先生と1984年に発掘調査をしたシリア共和国のドゥアラ洞窟でも多くのネズミの骨が発見されており、以前はフクロウが棲息していたことが推測されました。

　また、群馬県立自然史博物館時代に、自然教室でこのペリットをアメリカの教材会社カロライナ・バイオロジカル・サプライから購入して、ネズミの骨の部位同定と何個体含まれるかの授業を行ったことがあります。平均して、約3個体含まれていたのを確認しました。ちなみに、私のペリットはサイズが大きく、5個体が確認されました。この内容は、群馬県立自然史博物館の研究報告第4号に「フクロウのペリットを使用したネズミの骨学」という内容で書いています。

　この本は、イギリス・ヨーク大学の動物考古学者兼環境考古学者、テリー・オコナー（Terry O'CONNOR）さんが、都市で出土する獣骨の分析法について書いた本です。原題は、『The Analysis of Urban Animal Bone Assemblages』です。2003年に、出版されました。副題には、考古学者のためのハンドブックとあります。

　本書の内容は、以下のようになります。

　意外かもしれませんが、ヨークは産業革命までロンドンに次いでイギリス第二位の人口を有していました。ヴァイキングが支配していた歴史もあり、1984年にはヨルヴィック・ヴァイキング・センター（Yorvik Viking Centre）が開館し、2001年にはリニューアルしています。2009年は、開館から25周年ですが、これまでに約1500万人が訪問したそうです。

　私も、イギリス留学中に訪問したことがありますが、是非、リニューアルしたものを見てみたいと思っています。当時は、訪問者が小型の乗り物に乗って、AD975年のヴァイキングの村を見るという趣向で、大変、素晴らしいものでした。特に、トイレの臭いや人々の会話や音までも再現していたのには驚きました。展示の最後には、現代の研究室が再現されており、考古学・人骨・獣骨・花粉分析等の分析方法が展示されており、感銘を受けました。

　本書は、江戸時代当時世界第一の都市だった江戸（東京）の遺跡での獣骨調査に参考となるかもしれません。
