　この本は、元パリ国立自然史博物館の人類学者、マルセラン・ブール（Marcellin BOULE）［1861－1942］さんとアンリ・ヴァロア（Henri V. VALLOIS）［1889－1981］さんが書いた、古人類学の教科書です。原題は『Fossil Men』で、直訳すると「化石人類」となります。元々はフランス語で書かれていますが、本書は、その英訳版で1957年にThames and Hudson社から出版されました。アマゾンで検索しましたが、ヒットしませんでしたのでリンクさせていません。

　本書は、私がヤングの3部作と勝手に呼んでいるものの1冊です。ちなみに、その他2冊は、前々回にご紹介した「脊椎動物の生活」と、前回にご紹介した「哺乳類の生活」です。本書は、当然内容も古くなっていますが、脊椎動物から哺乳類そしてヒトへと段階を踏んで本を執筆したヤングの考え方がつまっている点が参考になります。
