[用例研究 143] 〈in case〉
〈in case＋節（ＳＶ）〉 は「もし～の場合には」「もしも～なら」「～するといけないから」といつた意味で使はれます。

私が列車に乘り遲れた場合は、待たずに出發してください。
143.2 In case your husband dies, you'll get the insurance money.
もし御主人が亡くなられたら、あなたに保險金が入ります。

in case は、英米で多少異なる使ひ方がされてゐるやうです。Longman Dictionary of American English の (just)in case の項には a) as a way of being prepared for something that might happen（「起こるかもしれないことに備へ［る手立てとし］て」） b) if（「もし～なら」）といふ説明があり、Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English の in case の項には a) for fear that（「～するのを恐れて/～しないやうに」） b) because ... perhaps（「おそらく～から」） c) (especially American English) if（［特にアメリカ英語で］「もし～なら」） などと説明されてゐます。例文で眺めてみませう。

（米）もしこの子が泣いたら、この玩具をわたしてください。
（英）この子が泣くといけないからこの玩具をわたしてください。
in case と if では微妙に異なるニュアンスもあるやうで、Michael Swan は次のやうな paraphrase の例を紹介してゐます。

in case の後に用ゐられる動詞は、直説法現在、should＋原形、假定法過去とされます。直説法現在が一般的で、should は事態の實現度がやや低いと話し手が感じてゐる場合に使はれます。假定法過去の使用は、現代英語では一般的ではないやうで、是非・可否について議論がなされてゐる状況です。
