この本は、ケニアの先史人類学者、ルイス・リーキー（Louis LEAKEY）［1903－1972］さんを記念して編集されたものです。グリン・アイザック（Glynn ISAAC）さんとエリザベス・マッカウン（McCown）さんによる編集で、『Human Origins：Louis Leakey and the East African Evidence』という題で、1976年にA. Staples Press Booksから出版されました。ちなみに、本書の表紙は、群馬県立自然史博物館にも展示されている、アメリカの芸術家、ジェイ・マターネス（Jay MATTERNESS）さんによります。
