この本は、国際日本文化研究センター（当時、現高知工科大学）の赤澤 威先生とダマスカス大学のスルタン・ムヘセン（Sultan MUHESEN）さんによる編集で、シリアのネアンデルタール人の遺跡デデリエ洞窟について書かれたものです。原題は、『Neanderthal Burials: Excavations of the Dederiyeh Cave Afrin, Syria』で、直訳すると、「ネアンデルタール人の埋葬：シリア・アフリンのデデリエ洞窟の発掘調査」となります。2002年に、国際日本文化研究センターから出版されています。非売品なのか、アマゾンで検索しましたがヒットしませんでした。私は、出版時に、赤澤 威先生から寄贈していただきました。
このデデリエ洞窟は、1989年から2001年まで合計11回にわたって発掘調査が行われています。1993年8月23日に、このデデリエ洞窟で発見されたネアンデルタール人幼児は、当時話題になりました。実は、1997 年にはさらに、ネアンデルタール人の幼児が追加発見されています。このネアンデルタール人の発見は、1961年にイスラエルのアムッド洞窟で、鈴木 尚[1912－2004]先生が発見して以来、日本人調査団としては、2例目となります。もちろん、シリアでの日本人によるネアンデルタール人の発見は初めてで、かつシリア初です。
