　Today, as Uganda celebrates the 53rd anniversary of its independence in 1962, it salutes Japan for excellent bilateral cooperation and looks forward to an even more improved and strengthened relationship based on mutual interests and partnerships.

　On this great occasion, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda, Mr. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, extends his warm greetings to Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Mrs. Akie Abe, as well as the government and people of Japan．

　On behalf of the government and people of Uganda, I have the honor to extend my profound gratitude to the government and people of Japan for the cordial hospitality extended the President of the Republic of Uganda during his official working visit to Japan last month.

　これは10月9日のウガンダ共和国独立記念日に際し、Betty Grace Akech-Okullo駐日大使がジャパンニューズ紙に寄せた記事*冒頭、挨拶部分（で、いいだろう）である。
　第3段落では9月に大統領が訪日した際のことにもふれている。
　記事はこのあと、2国間関係、(日本からの）経済協力、投資機会、自然とそれを活かした観光振興について述べているのだが、やはりこの冒頭文が印象に残る。

　一般的な新聞（全国紙）と、ジャパンニューズやジャパンタイムズのちがいの一つが、外国の記念日における駐日大使等からの寄稿、特集記事だろう。挨拶冒頭に、〇月〇日は〇〇国のどのような日なのかの紹介、〇〇国の代表からの天皇皇后両陛下、日本の政治指導者、日本国民への挨拶が続く。
　日本語でもそうだが、挨拶には決まったパターンがある。英語の表現でも同じなのは分かるのだが、使われている言い回し、動詞、形容詞を見ると、ああこう言うのかと思う。日本で英語教育を受けたものとしても、現在仕事としてかかわる1人としても、なかなか学ぶ機会のない英文の表現だと思う。
　教材には、、、使えないかな。
