最後の"standard pieties"が分からない。ググってみてもわずか131件しかヒットしない、ということはあまり使われないコロケーションである可能性が大きい。宗教関係の引用を除外すると、以下のように使われるようだ。
Despite the standard pieties that patriotism usually evokes, one of the most familiar comments about patriotism is Samuel Johnson's remark that "patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.
There's an ideological mass reaching the critical point here, ready to force its way through the standard pieties.
他にいくつか用例を見て、「おためごかし」程度の意味で使われているのだろう見当をつけた。
その後いろいろ辞書を見てみたが、英和辞典では『ジーニアス英和』が圧勝だった。"standard pieties"はないが、"pieties"で「慣習追従的な[偽善的な]姿勢[言葉、行為]」とある。すべての辞書を見たわけではないが、他の辞書にはこの語義は見あたらない。なぜ『ジーニアス』だけが可能だったのだろうか。
