イギリスの法律家で作詞家のフレデリック・エドワード・ウェザリ（1848～1929）は、1910年に「ダニー・ボーイ」という詞を書きました。
　

これにつける適当なメロディがないまま寝かせておいたところ、２年後の1912年、アメリカに住んでいた義妹が「ロンドンデリー・エア」の楽譜を

送ってきました。

　

それを見たウェザリは、「ダニー・ボーイ」がこの曲によく合うことに気がつき、元の詞を若干手直しして、このメロディに当てはめます。

「ダニー・ボーイ」は1913年にニューヨークで発行され、まもなく世界に広まりました。

　

ウェザリの詞は、マスターには恋の歌のように感じられたこともありましが、Danny boy（ダニー坊や）とあるので、やはり母子の別れの歌と

みるべきでしょうね。
