アメリカのソングライター、ウィリアム・シェークスピア・ヘイズによって1871年に作られた曲です。

彼は、シェークスピアというミドルネームが気恥ずかしかったらしく、ほとんど使わなかったそうですが。

ヘイズは1837年、ケンタッキー州のルーイヴィルで生まれ、1907年、70歳のとき、同地で亡くなっています。

 生涯に約350曲作りましたが、そのうちわが国でもよく知られているのが、この曲と「冬の星座」（原題は"Mollie Darling"）です。

ヘイズは非常に子煩悩な人だったようで、子どもが生まれるたびに、それを記念する曲を作っていたそうですよ。
