厳寒の札幌で熱い議論

2月14日、研究集会開催。本研究集会の特徴は、陸および水環境保全に関して、大学研究者のみならず、民間、国公立研究所、行政の立場から広く、かつ、深く徹底的に議論することです。

 

多くの方の協力を得て、今回も盛会となりました。

学術雑誌掲載論文ができあがるまで

このブログでささやかな情報発信しているのですが、どなたかにお役に立っているのか気になるところです。そもそもブログを始めた理由はいくつかありますが、主に受験生向けで、研究室の研究内容や雰囲気を知って頂くためです

 

ほぼ9年を経過したブログですが、エントリーが相当の数になりました。派手な記事は無いのですが、好評いただいているエントリーは、「学術雑誌掲載論文ができあがるまで」です。小保方晴子さんのSTAP細胞のようなNatureクラスの投稿論文とまではいかなくても、専門研究分野の国際雑誌の審査の過程を紹介しております。特に、博士の学位取得を目指している博士課程大学院生を念頭に書いております。ご参考になれば幸いです。

 

現在、日本生態学会英文雑誌Ecological ResearchAssociate Editor-in-Chiefを務めており、微生物関連全般を担当しています。Editorという仕事は相当にストレスがかかり、何年も続けられるものではありません。また、向き不向きもあります。私自身、Editorには向かないかも?


第3の新属硫黄酸化細菌~小島さんの偉業~

淡水環境、特に湖沼での硫黄循環は不明な点が多々ある。硫黄の酸化過程で重要な役割を担う硫黄酸化菌に関して、小島さんはこれまでに新属の微生物を2つ発見して来た。小島さんの探求はさらに続き、とうとう第3の新属硫黄酸化細菌を琵琶湖より単離することに成功。

 

その名は Sulfurisoma sediminicola 。ドメインバクテリア・プロテオバクテリア門・ベータプロテオバクテリア綱に属する新属である。この菌は硫黄や水素を利用して独立栄養で増殖ができる。さらに、酸素が無くても硝酸があれば嫌気的にも増殖し、しかも、従属栄養性の特徴を兼ね備えている。この菌の生息環境を想像してみてみる、とても興味深い生理学的特性である。

 

ちなみに菌株名はBSN1。最初に小島さんからこの菌株名を告げられた時は、一瞬「新潟総合テレビ(BSN)かな」と思ったが、彼に嘲笑されることを案じ口にするのを止めた。「B」は琵琶湖(Lake Biwa)、「S」は硫黄(sulfur)そして「N」は硝酸(nitrate)のこと。
