粘菌(変形菌)は、かつて博物学者・南方熊楠が魅せられた生き物。落ち葉などの表面に子実体を形成し、好適条件下で多核の変形体に身を変えて移動する。そして、乾燥した条件では、再び子実体へ。子実体は、いつしか弾けて内包された胞子が空中を舞って新天地へと向かう。
専門学術雑誌Soil Biology & Biochemistryに掲載された「土壌中の変形菌」に関する総説(Stephenson et al., SBB 43: 2237-2242, 2011)には、こんな記述がある。
The dark-spored clade, best represented in public databases, has been targeted in three pioneering studies. Kamono and Fukui (2006) used a short SSU fragment (~460 bp) to investigate the Physarales (one of the two dark-spored orders).
加茂野さんの研究がいかにパイオニア研究であった。上記の総説中で、何カ所も加茂野さんの下記3論文が引用されている。極めて理学的な研究なのだが、今後森林生態系における粘菌を代表とする原生生物の生理生態研究が加速されるに違いない。

<2001年11月。山梨県山中湖近くの三国山にて。研究をはじめた頃の加茂野さん(大学4年)。>
加茂野晃子さん(卒業生)の粘菌(変形菌)に関する論文が受理されました。幾多の苦難を乗り越えて、粘りに粘った力作です。
2007年から3年間行ったカバリエ・スミス教授(英国・オックスフォード大学)とアン・マリーさんとの共同研究の成果です(王立協会の2国間国際共同研究)。日英を互いに行き来して、北海道の雨竜研究林、フランスアルプス、そしてスコットランドの草地の土壌中に生息する変形菌の多様性を土壌から抽出したRNAで解析した結果です。いずれの調査地でも、残雪期に訪れて、積雪下や融雪後土壌を採取し、変形菌の多様性に対する雪の影響を調べています。必ずしも寒さに対して強いわけではない加茂野さんですが、持ち前の粘りと情熱で好雪性変形菌に対する研究態度は学ぶべきものがあります。さらに、彼女の解析の緻密さも一流です。
少し時間はかかりましたが、この研究プロジェクトでは前人未踏の成果が得られたと思います。最終的には、3報の論文が誕生し、プロジェクトとしては成功したと言って良いでしょう。
