チューボーですよ:学問への扉

先日の中学生の研究所訪問。ふと、中学校に入学した頃のことを思い出す。当時、雑誌の付録で万年筆がちょっぴり大人の気分にさせてくれたのだが。直に、暗澹たる気持ちに転ずる。万年筆からインクが漏れ出し、結局は長持ちせず。友達の何人かは、白いワイシャツのポケットに刺した万年筆からインク漏れ。しばらく、そのシミが取れず、付録万年筆の恐ろしさが残る。

それから8年後、教育実習である中学校の教壇に立つ。あの頃、何を考えていたのだろう?





そして、その4年後。ある大学で、生物学実習のティーチング・アシスタントをしていたら、実習生の一人から声をかけられる、「福井先生ですよね?」と。続けて、「○○中学校で教育実習に来て、理科を教えてくれた福井先生ですよね」。こんなところで再会するとは!

このことは、小学生や中学生たちを向き合う時の心構えを深く考える出来事であり、その後も常に意識していることでもある。

見学に来てくれた中学生たち。彼らの中から、将来科学者が生まれるかもしれない。

この頃、私たちの低温研究室は、たいへんの繁昌である。

そろそろ夏休みが近づいて、構内の楡と芝生とが、鮮やかな初夏の緑のよそおいを完成するにつれて、例年のように、東京からの修学旅行の組がいくつも訪れて来る。そしてその時期が過ぎると、夏休みに入って、よく学会などがある。この近年は、夏の北海道で学会をすることが流行るらしく、毎年二つや三つの会があるのが普通になっている。

修学旅行の人たちも、学会のお客様方も、よく低温室を見に来られる。夏の北海道で雪の結晶を見るというのが、何か言葉の上からも、一つの魅力(アトラクション)になるのかもしれないが、要するに、分かりやすいからであろう。

もっとも書いてみたら、まだ完成もしない研究のことを、むやみと広告ばかりしているようになって、少々気恥ずかしい思いもする。一年経って、このうちのどれもが立ち枯れになってしまったら、その方がもっと滑稽な昔語りになることであろう。

毎年、地元中学校からの研究所訪問。「環境学習」であったり、「職場体験」であったりと。中学生たちからは、素朴かつ鋭い質問をいくつも受ける、熱い眼差しで。我が身も、初心に立ち帰る瞬間でもある。 



金沢にて:日本陸水学会大会

9月27日から30日まで、金沢大学で開催された日本陸水学会に参加いたしました。



私にとっては初めて入会した学会でもあり、とても思い出深い学会なのですが、しばらくの間「幽霊会員」状態でした。

大会期間中に、河北潟を見学する機会を得て、いろいろと感じることも多く。ふと、卒業研究での調査地・佐潟を思いします。

当研究室に所属する大学院修士課程の院生の皆さんも陸水学会で発表してみてはいかがでしょう。来年は、9月に東京で開催される予定です。

寺田寅彦博士が住んでいた街でもあり、彼の記念館へ。

街中にも、寺田博士。図書館等複合施設「オーテピア」にて。「ねえ君、ふしぎだと思いませんか」、問いかける寺田博士。



一連の会議と講演会を終え、札幌へ向かう。アンパンマンもお見送り。
